London Wolves eNews - an occasional newsletter keeping you up to date.
Congratulations to Mick McCarthy and the players for getting Wolves back into the Premiership seven points clear scoring 80 goals (GD+28). And for quote of the season - when Sky said "how do you feel about clinching the Championship?" after the Barnsley match - in his broadest Barnsley accent he replied "Champion"! It had Jeff Stelling in stitches. A Champion tribute here on You tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsFOqXY 5 games to go and counting; good luck to the Wolves in the next three and a half weeks. eFLASH Stef has just delivered the December 2008 edition of the London Wolves from the printers and Dave will be sending them out or presenting them to you this week. For those of you who like the electronic version, this is attached. If you wish to download a higher resolution version which improves some of the pictures then that is on the newsletters page on the website click here after logging in http://www.londonwolves.com/html/lw_newsletters.html . This edition contains Stuart's view from the Chair (and from Charlton), 2008-9 Meet the Players, Wolves win at the Masters, the new competition (see below), Matt Murray, Meet the Players pictures, Steve's super match reports (featuring worse puns than Dave's- "Hoopless" being a fair report though!), Steve Morgan's private aircraft, the Inaugral Hall of Fame dinner, a thank you letter to Peter W, Stoo and Dave, an interesting prediction from Davowolf, the "top for Christmas" league table, Peter's Travel News, and a feature on Wolves new Study Centre. And don't forget the competition to win WW - The Complete Record or the Black Country Giants - tell Dave your answer before the end of the Blues FA Cup match or enter on line here http://www.londonwolves.com/html/wwlsc_comp.html You may have heard Kights on the Daz Hale show on WM last night - if not - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p001rkp6/Daz_Hale_22_12_2008/ (but you need to instal Real Player to make it work). Came over very well. Afficianados of ALOB will recognise Michael Kightly is Pretty Rad which is here YouTube - Ace Bushy Striptease - Michael Kightly is Pretty Rad on youtube. Also on youtube by the way, are the goals and songs from the Charlton 2-3 last season here http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dAqJmkfTB4k (this is Sylvan's song) his goal and part of Karl's are there as well with a link to those videos. And, talking of A Load Of Bull, Charles has his Christmas edition out, posted yesterday or on sale for Boxing Day - you can get it at the ground. Regular subscription info is on our ALOB page. Well, here's to three points and no stretchers or broken noses against the Blades on Boxing Day and three more at the seaside on Monday night on Sky Sports (even without Kights on a a one match ban). If you're setting out late on Friday, or have a recorder, the Wolves Midlands Masters win earlier this summer is on Sky Sports Extra (not SS1) on Boxing Day from 8:00am to 11:00am. The overall UK win should be on SSX on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. Have a great Christmas and enjoy the ride in 2009. Our very best thanks go to all at Molineux for a cracking first 23 matches, and our very best wishes for the next 23. Up the Wolves!
ENEWS here Hi everyone, Well, the new lads settled in very quickly against Paul Ince's Blackburn - and a great goal from George Elokobi, a proper pen, a great one-on-one and a proper poacher's goal against England's #1 (ok ex #1) - there can't be many teams who had more than half their pre-season programme played against teams managed by ex Wolves favourite players or managers, but there were several wobbles when it mattered against the Pilgrims and Accrington Stanley. I suspect tomorrow's match will be the indicator for the season. Peter's travel news has all the latest information - be aware that the main line rail works are likely to cause disruption until the New Year, but contrary to press stories about cheaper tickets not being available, Peter has preserved the £17 Adult price and booked via Marylebone for Wolverhampton.
Preseason Hi everyone hope you're not suffering too many withdrawal symptoms from the lack of football... it's only a week to go, though, before the pre-seasons kick off at Wrexham. This set of matches intriguingly has thrown up encounters with a raft of previous Molineux favourites. A late addition to the list of Alex Rae (Dundee FC & the real player of the Premiership year), Graham Turner (Hereford), Mark McGhee (Motherwell) saw promotion winning Paul "The Guvnor" Ince leaving MK Dons to lead Blackburn Rovers straight into a friendly already set up at Moli on August 2nd a week before the season begins. If you'd like to go to this match and travel with London Wolves please call or email Peter Woodifield asap on travel@londonwolves.com . Details of these matches are on the fixtures page http://www.londonwolves.com/html/2008-9_fixtures.html together with the season's fixtures. Peter has also published the travel details for the first http://www.londonwolves.com/html/travel.html five matches of the season, starting at Plymouth and welcoming Accrington Stanley for the Carling Cup home kick-off. The travel page also has details of a hospitality package at the Tractor Boys (23rd August). Don't forget to let Peter know if you'd like to join the London Wolves table for the Sherpa Van dinner. Mick's been busy strengthening the squad with David Jones (from Derby), Richard Stearman (Leicester City), and Sam Vokes (Bournemouth) coming in and as reported at the AGM, no move for the antique Dwight Yorke. Garry's News is keeping up with the stories and rumours. Congratulations, too, to the player London Wolves have sponsored since his arrival from Sunderland in 2006, Neill Collins, in winning a four year contract - one for each of his match-winning goals last season. Attached is the latest Newsletter produced by Stef, with Match reports by Steve, a tribute to Mark Kendall, and the minutes of this year's AGM, including the presentation to Stuart to thank him for all his work which left his "flabber gasted". Our thanks to ALP Printers from Bromley for their fine production and for the softcopy version attached here. This and earlier newsletters are in the members' section of the website at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/lw_newsletters.html Fixtures are copyright of the Football League and licence details are on the fixtures page of the website. ed the Newsletter is in the members’ section. Login here then go to the newsletters page here Don't forget the competition to win Waggy's Tales is still running - I have only had two correct answers from London Wolves members so far (!) so there's every chance of winning, and it really is a great book. The prize is to publicise Tony Matthews' definitive new Wolverhampton Wanderers - The Complete Record which is orderable from Wolves or Thomas Publications. The competition is on-line, together with order forms and links, at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/complete_wolves.html or you can give your answers to Dave Slape or email Peter at webmaster@londonwolves.com . Competition question: which of the following was never a Chairman of Wolves?: Steve Morgan, Sir Jack Hayward, Jack Harris, Derek Dougan, Doug Ellis, John Ireland, Stan Cullis Some good news from Simon Dunkley is that Iggy is now getting NHS funding and the fundraising efforts are to give him and his family respite care. Some 180 turned up to the latest dinner and I hope to have some photos soon. Details of how to contribute are on Iggy's page on the website. If you'd like to help deaf children you can sponsor member Harley Bill Singleton's 7000 mile Alaskan journey. Bill is riding to support the National Deaf Children's Society. Thomas Publications reply by 23rd June the attached document has an order form for the current Wolves books, and, you can pre-order and get your name into the Roll of Honour in the brand new "Wolves - The Complete Record" if you order by 23rd June. ps Garry's News is keeping up with the transfer speculation, but we have been told that there's no truth in the Dwight Yorke one! Up the Wolves! Happy holidays Well, it's a shame that Club Captain Gary Breen's moment of madness in giving away a totally unnecessary free kick should just about throw away the season in the 94th against the Tractor Boys (now they can prove me wrong with 3 wins!). Don't forget, before the summer finishes we'll have the AGM - you'll get an email or message from Dave when the date is announced. In the meantime, thanks to the generosity of Rachel at Breedon Books and Kirsty at ILC Media we have two competitions to finish the season. Breedon have just published Waggy's Tales - not just an autobiography - but a collection of stories about events during his career written by Dave Wagstaffe - without a ghost writer and you can just hear him telling the story. To coincide with the Black Country derby on April 15th ILC Media have produced a DVD of the last time we beat the Baggies, in a stirring match at Molineux, with a goal from sub Jay Bothroyd. There's also a charity Wolves match with a Mel Eves 11 next Sunday at Banbury.
the competition question is "Waggy scored one of his 32 Wolves goals in a cup final but which one - the FA Cup Final, The Sherpa Van Trophy, North American Soccer League Championship Final, the UEFA Cup Final, the Football League Cup Final, the Texaco Cup, the Anglo Italian Cup, or the Zenith Data Systems Cup?" Go here to enter http://www.londonwolves.com/html/waggy_s_tales.html More about Waggy's book follows NEW COMPETITION 2 - BEATING THE BAGGIES March 11th 2007. Wolves beat the Baggies and leap frogged them in the table. Relive the whole 90 minutes with this great new DVD. The competition question is "Match winner Jay Bothroyd started his career as a trainee at which Premiership Club - Wolves, West Ham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U or Newcastle?" Enter online at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/beat_baggies.html You may enter the competitions on line (you don't need to login) or by giving your answers to Dave Slape by Friday May 2nd. Where we have multiple correct answers a draw will be made and prizes will be available in the City Bar before the Plymouth match. One copy is for members, the other for non-members.
WAGGY'S TALES This is one of the best Wolves "biographies" I've ever read. You can just hear Waggy telling the stories... stories about his time in Gold n Black - from John Ireland bringing him in - on £35 a week, signing on Boxing Day 1964 and going straight into the team to play the Villa that day for Peter Broadbent's last match; through to his times running the Sports and Social Club, and Waggy's Bar. He tells how he - and the team - were taken around Los Angeles by his old Manchester born friend Davy Jones of the Monkees. He doesn't pull his punches - when talking about the domineering and obnoxious attitude of Bill McGarry - who wouldn't even let the players keep their Wembley tracksuits. He talks about the great Wolves players he played with - including Knocker Knowles, Dennis Law, the Wolves of the 60s and 70s, Doog's "This is Your Life", some "Crazy Keepers" including how Lofty survived being set up on Rye and Dry by Waggy and Mike Bailey. He talks about Wolves on their travels too, from LA to Europe to New Zealand. Included in the pictures are Waggy and Val and the 1967 team at our 40th Anniversary Dinner. If you don't win the copy, buy it. WOLVES ALL STARS - charity match geoff lines 'ere from www.soccerx.co.uk Football Fancast this new free service offers a half hour weekly review of the preceding weekend's action and rumours and thoughts about the Wolves. It's made by real fans, with the occasional WWLSC input, and you can listen on the web or download the webcast and listen on your ipod http://www.footballfancast.com/fancast/Wolverhampton/latest/ There's a link on our homepage. Unforgettable Doog - the DVD is still available at a member's discounted price or from Wolverhampton suppliers, http://www.londonwolves.com/html/doog_dvd.html On Probably the biggest event of the close season though will be the unveiling of a three pose statue of Gordon Banks by Pele himself at the Britannia Stadium on 12th July http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/staffordshire/7193358.stm Unfortunately it looks as thought our season might end sooner than we'd hoped. It does mean though that you'll see the end of season WWLSC Newsletter, which, as well as Steve's match reports, will include a meeting Stoo and Stef had with Steve Morgan at The Valley. The major part of the website move is complete, but if you spot any problems please let me know. We've also obtained access to some match footage which is linked to in the match reports. ....and we mustn't forget London Wolves' congratulations to Roy and Ruth Eagles on their wedding on February 27th. Some pictures of the happy couple are on the home page with a link to more on the WWLSC member pictures page. If you'd like your pictures on our website please email them to me. Finally, it's Roy's countrymen at the Moli tomorrow night and we must also congratulate Dave Jones on taking his side to Wembley for the Cup Final. Dave was always generous to WWLSC and remains the only Wolves manager to take us up since Graham Hawkins working under the chairmanship of the Doog. Don't forget the home match against Plymouth kicks off an hour earlier on the Sunday at 2:00pm and the Fans' Player of the Season award will be made after the match. Up the Wolves!!
Hi Everyone Happy Easter, and well done to Andy Keogh for shutting up the prats in the South Bank yesterday with his 97th minute equaliser with an assist from Freddy. Meet the Players 2008 Stef has fixed the Meet the Players with Mick for Friday 28th March at the team hotel at 5:30pm. Please be there for 5.00pm as we have to sort out whereabouts in the hotel the meeting will be. The players will depart for their dinner on time, so please don't be late. Stuart will present the WWLSC Player Of The Season Award at the meeting to the overwhelming winner.....no need to say who cornered over 80% of the votes! The location is in Docklands - more details are in the secure area of the website (under "members diary") including a map and aerial view. Newcastle, as a division one team, were clear favourites in their third final in 4 years but Wolves went ahead and stayed ahead in the match played at Crystal Palace Park. Wolves are planning to celebrate the centenary and are looking for memorabilia to use in the celebrations, especially the match day programme. Stooo thinks he may have missed that match, but if any of you have anything you could loan/sell to Wolves please let me know. EUFA Cup Final 1972 - help required The family of Bernard Shaw are trying to find video footage of the final. If anyone recorded any of it and has it on video please let me know. ---------------February 2008 - yes, it's that time of the year again. As Stef is hoping to fix the Meet the Players for Friday 28th March at the team hotel, Stuart would like to present the WWLSC Player Of The Season at the meeting. Although there's always a chance that the run in might bring up a new hero (Kevin Kyle scoring a hat trick in every match through to Wembley perhaps) we have to close off the voting immediately before the Saints match (March 4th) so please either give your vote to Dave Slape on the train or in the pub, or you can vote on-line. If you have family membership - don't forget you have multiple votes. Matt Murray showed how much the players like the award when he was interviewed last week on Midlands Tonight.
------------December 2007 - Unforgettable Doog; December Newsletter attached; Doog tribute attached. please note - the Newsletter and Doog tribute are not attached here but are on the WWLSC Newsletters page (password protected) here Hi everyone Happy Christmas. Here's your Christmas present......attached is the latest London Wolves Newsletter (see note above), in two parts. Part 1 is the regular newsletter with messages from the Chairman, travel news from Peter, a tribute to Norm Deeley as well as Steve's match reports. Part 2 is the tribute to Doog which Stuart promised in the previous issue. Printed copies have already been despatched. Sorry for any delay in the softcopy version - I'm afraid I've been a little tied up by the Doog tribute DVD - Unforgettable Doog, and the printer again didn't provide a pdf file. If anyone's mail "bounces" because of file sizes I'll resend with a link. But, once again, a "tour de force" from Stef as acting Newsletter editor. Website Apologies in advance but the website may go off the air for a couple of weeks in January. The current service provider is not very good as well as being expensive so we will be changing ISPs. These things should be totally seamless but experience shows they're not. Cutover details will be on the site up to 4th January. "Unforgettable Doog" We've sold over 500 copies of the DVD and expect that over Christmas period to have reached close to 800. We have another batch in production - the WM collector centre in Salop St, W H Smith and HMV in the Mander Centre and Kevin's stall opposite the Wanderer have been the prime locations and we'd like to thank them for their efforts. As you know profits will go to Xpro. The DVD - just under 3 hours of Doog - is still available from me via email or from Dave Slape for £10 plus £2 UK postage. From Jan 2nd the price will increase to £15 plus postage. A discount on this price will be available to WWLSC members - details will be in the members pages. We must praise Merlyn Humphreys for her promotional activity - a series of interviews on Beacon Radio Gold and in the Black Country Mail (part of the Birmingham Evening Mail group) - copies of the articles and interviews will be on the Doog DVD page on the website/ The book competition: I was diverted to France over the last few days so couldn't close the competition so it will stay available until January 31st at noon. We have two copies of Dave Instone's super new book "Wolves in Pictures" to give away - one for WWLSC members and one for non-members. Just answer a simple question (see below) on the website or give your answer to me or Dave Slape. All correct answers will go into a draw and the prizes will be available at the Blades match on Jan 1st. More details below. The competition publicises two fundraising activities: - WWLSC special DOOG DVD Unforgettable Doog - SuperWoman runs New York more about these in this eNews. Contents
Neill - who WWLSC are delighted sponsor - is still second top scorer and nearly went top but Jay was offside against Leicester. I managed to avoid hearing the result while whitevanning around France so watched the recording "as live" and was delighted to see the substitutions salvage a point. As with QPR, though, should we have been in that position? (rhetorical question). Garry will bring transfer speculation to you in the next few weeks while the window is open in his news. Date/Time Changes We still have a some strange times for matches Watford away on 2nd Feb is a 5:20 live on Sky kick off. Baggies home is high Noon Sunday 9th March and the PNE Away match is on Wednesday 12th March Travel Updates Date and time moves are on Peter's travel page. http://www.londonwolves.com/html/travel.html We will have the January details up shortly. Wolves in Pictures by Dave Instone Dave Instone managed to update the book to cover Doog's untimely death before it went to print. It covers the post war period up to the end of 2006-7 season and has some great pictures. There's an order form on our site to order from the publishers or it's on sale in the Wolves shops for £17.99. But, thanks to Dave's generosity, you can win a copy of this excellent Wolves souvenir in our competition.... The question is Two Wolves legends died this year, Derek Dougan and Norm Deeley. How many goals between them did they score at Wembley. Hint: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Enter online at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/wolvesinpix.html or email your name, email address, and answer to Doog@londonwolves.com or give your answer to Dave Slape with your name and contact details. There will be a draw from all correct entries received by midday on December 31st. One copy goes to a WWLSC member, one to a non-member. We're running the competition to publicise the launch of our tribute DVD to the Doog, and to seek support for WWLSC member Phil Bant's fundraising for the Dreams Come True children's charity. Phil ran the London Marathon in April and New York in November dressed as Superwoman (see the picture). Unfortunately he was ill in New York, but still finished the 26 miles for his sponsors, even though it took him an hour longer than his London time. You can donate at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/marathon.html or www.justgiving.com/superphil. The Doog DVD is to raise funds for Xpro, an organisation founded by Doog to help ex Professional Footballers who didn't make the sort of wages seen in the premiership financially through events such as the Iggy Cartwright Dinner. Doog was booked to appear at a tribunal in Hastings for a Portsmouth player but his untimely death came the day before. Norm Deeley You can read our tribute in the attached newsletter Iggy Cartwright We had a message from Iggy which has brilliant news .... To everyone at London Wolves, have a great xmas and new year, thanks for all your support. All our love Ian Cartwright and family. Ps My youngest son Danny as signed for Wolves academy and as made me very proud father. iggy x Football Aid The charity, strongly supported by Bully who is now an Ambassador for them, is again offering people the chance to play at Molineux against and with Wolves legends. The date hasn't yet been announced for 2008 but I'll update the site when it is. You can pre-register at www.footballaid.com Staying Away? (from November) If you're planning to stay away for a match, you can get details of hotels near any League ground in the country - just go to http://www.matchhotels.com They get reasonable rates too. A reminder that we get good rates at the refurbished Britannia in Wolverhampton (details of both of these are on the Travel Page) Chatting about Wolves (from November) If you have time to kill, there are several on-line forums (fora?). The most active two are The_Wolf http://www.the-wolf.co.uk/ and Molineux Mix (named after the Express & Star site which seemed to be closed after pressure from the club, which was denied at the time) http://www.molineuxmix.co.uk (if you go to that one vote for us as a Top Site!). Gavin Hill's The Wolves Site is also a fan club http://www.thewolvessite.co.uk/ . If any of you would like a forum opened up on our site let me know but the previous attempt attracted one member! The Official Wolves Quiz Book (from November) This, with a foreword by King John, will be published in February. As soon as we have details of how to buy we'll let you know, but I also hope to get a copy to give away as a competition prize. It's been put together by Chris Cowlin and Phil Solomon. Class of 2005,6 etc (updated from November) Following the November newsletter, there was a nice profile of Paul Ince, Manager of MK Dons in the Times on Christmas Eve. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/football_league/article3090359.ece Will he take over when Mick goes? Rob G found a trade magazine with an interview with Steve Morgan that said he didn't like changing management teams though. Doog DVD - Unforgettable Doog Is already in it's 4th reprint. Thanks to Beacon Radio and the Black Country Mail (part of the Birmingham Mail) a lot of publicity has been generated - all of which is down to Merlyn Humphreys driving this. The introductory price remains at £10 (+£2 postage) from Dave or me until January 2nd. A revised price for WWLSC members will be published in the secure area of the website. It contains footage from the 60s and 70s - the hat trick versus Hull, the 6-5 win against Frank Munro's Washington Whips, and Doog's goal against Brazil - plus interviews and appearances featuring the Doog from recent years - as CEO, that Kettering shirt, and on Question Time. It even includes a unique recording of Doog singing! We have included most of his funeral service (one piece with his sons, is, unfortunately not available). Running time is 2 hours 55 minutes so it'll give you something to watch on Christmas Day. It's not a biography, more a souvenir of and tribute to the Doog. The cost will be £10 + p&p and you'll be able to reserve your copy from me, Dave Slape or by sending a note to Doog@LondonWolves.com. Some of the video quality does suffer from its age, like most of us! Profits from the sales will go to the charity to support less well off footballers which Doog founded - Xpro, the International Association for ex-Professional Footballers. The DVD has been produced with Merlyn Humphreys, Doog's Partner, and with the support of Doog's sister Coreen and niece Josephine. Merlyn has obtained permission to include footage from the BBC, Sky Sports and ITV. Contents: 1 London Wolves Introduction Additional Doog information A Load of Bull - Special Issue Doog Tribute (from November) The special issue, significantly produced for the Hull match, a special tribute to Derek Dougan has sold extremely well, but Charles still has some copies. -------November 2007 - Doog DVD; Win Wolves in Pix book Well, a third of the way through the season and we've spent very little time out of the playoff slots with even a few days in third. You'll be able to relive those matches very soon with the next London Wolves Newsletter, which will also contain the tribute to Doog which Stuart promised in the previous issue. I'll send a link for those of you who have asked for softcopy, while the printed ones should be despatched soon. Wolves this season has been a story of super effort - Michael Kightly being the epitome of this - but not being translated into goals and thus some frustrations coming out. And that frustration boiled over at Molineux on Saturday when only London Wolves' sponsored player Neill Collins got on the score sheet (to make him only one goal behind our top league scorers!) and then a sterling effort in defence from the back four to keep the three points. Mick was clearly upset by the frustrated crowd, quickly dashing down the tunnel at the end and then making his feelings clear to the fans in the radio interviews. Unfortunately, as we've seen before, especially in the Hoddle era, as soon as the crowd picks up around 23,000 then the support for the team seems to drop off. And on Saturday it probably didn't help that we could only draw against our last two opponents while they were being beaten 6-0 and 5-0 at the Tractor Boys and Wednesday. On a high note(!), the Elvis impersonator was described by Robbie Dennison, who now reports for Beacon Radio, as the best he's ever seen. Anyway, you can read more on the matches pages of the website and in the magazine with Steve Ray's reports, coming to you soon. A new competition: We have two copies of Dave Instone's super new book "Wolves in Pictures" to give away - one for WWLSC members and one for non-members. Just answer a simple question (see below) on the website or give your answer to me or Dave Slape. All correct answers will go into a draw after the Boxing Day match at Hull and the prizes will be available at the Blades match on Jan 1st . More details below. The competition is to publicise two fundraising activities: - WWLSC special DOOG DVD - SuperWoman runs New York more about these in this eNews. And we must also mention today's breaking news - that Chris Evans (no, not that one) is leaving the Wolves Academy after 17 years with the Wolves. He has nurtured a string of Internationals - especially Irish with Sammy Clingan doing well for NI and Robbie Keane captaining Ireland and becoming their all time leading scorer - as well as Welsh number 1 Wayne Hennessey and England's Joleon Lescott. Chris has accepted the first team coaching job under Gary Megson at Bolton Wanderers. We're grateful for all Chris has done to keep the youth coming through, and let's hope they can repay him next season by thrashing Bolton! Good Luck Chris. Contents
Neill has now scored the winner in both the Coventry (94th minute!) and Barnsley (13th minute) putting him one behind Freddy Eastwood and Michael Kightly in the League. WWLSC are delighted to be Neill's kit sponsor and send him our warmest congratulations. Oh, by the way, he and Kevin Foley did a superb job against Saints' Nathan Dyer and Bradley Wright Phillips last week at St Mary's. If you want to see the "highlights" go to U-Tube at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=A9tYT8hq60c If you can't see the pictures of Neill, Superwoman etc please look at the on-line edition here http://www.londonwolves.com/html/enews.html Date/Time Changes Don't forget we now have a series of strange times for matches Baggies away is high Noon Sunday 25th Colchester home is Wednesday 28th Home against Burnley and Leicester are both kicking off at 17:20 for Sky Sports (Saturdays 8th and 22nd December) Travel Updates These date and time moves are on Peter's travel page. http://www.londonwolves.com/html/travel.html Wolves in Pictures by Dave Instone Dave Instone managed to update the book to cover Doog's untimely death before it went to print. There will be a draw from all correct entries received by 7:00pm on Boxing Day (Hull away). Norm Deeley We were saddened to learn that Norm had been found dead at his home - which at been his mother's house. He was known as "the diminutive winger" who took Blackburn Rovers apart in the 1960 Cup Final forcing the own goal (see picture) which started our scoring and then scored the rest himself. He starred for Wolves throughout the title winning 50s also won two England caps. There are plans to name the playing fields where he coached youngsters after him. Wolves' CEO led the attendance at the funeral service. Profile here http://www.londonwolves.com/html/player_profiles.html Iggy Cartwright We heard from Iggy's fundraising leader, Simon Dunkley recently. I'm sure you'll all be delight to hear that a local businessman (Chris Massey) who runs large fundraising events has committed all their funds to Iggy - some £16,000! And the drugs are helping Ian to live in a relatively stable condition at the moment. Thanks to all who have supported him. Football Aid The charity, strongly supported by Bully who is now an Ambassador for them, is again offering people the chance to play at Molineux against and with Wolves legends. The date hasn't yet been announced for 2008 but I'll update the site when it is. You can pre-register at www.footballaid.com Staying Away? If you're planning to stay away for a match, you can get details of hotels near any League ground in the country - just go to http://www.matchhotels.com They get reasonable rates too. A reminder that we get good rates at the refurbished Britannia in Wolverhampton (details of both of these are on the Travel Page) Chatting about Wolves If you have time to kill, there are several on-line forums (fora?). The Official Wolves Quiz Book This, with a foreword by King John, will be published in February. As soon as we have details of how to buy we'll let you know, but I also hope to get a copy to give away as a competition prize. It's been put together by Chris Cowlin and Phil Solomon. Class of 2005,6 etc Just in passing, it seems ages ago that Rohan Ricketts was at the club, but he made a return appearance with Barnsley, while Darren Anderton has settled on the South Coast with Bournemouth. They drew Paul Ince's League leading MK Dons in the Johnsons Paint trophy quarter final and faced Keith Andrews - the club's captain and leading scorer! - Jemal Johnson, and Colin Cameron. Shame the Dons are out of the FA Cup - drawing Wolves in the third round would have been interesting. Alex Rae is player/manager at Dundee, while Mark Kennedy is still at the Palace. The Camarat is on loan at West Ham from Wigan. Nayls is still playing Champions League football with Celtic, while Kenny Miller (blamed for getting Nayls to Celtic at the time) has joined Derby County, but will be hoping to do it again for Scotland against the Azzuri. Top mover of course is Joleon Lescott, one of only two London Wolves Players of The Season to have won the trophy 3 times now, has been capped for England and is one of Everton's favourite players. Doog DVD Is almost complete and should be available before Christmas. Contents: 1 London Wolves Introduction Additional Doog information A Load of Bull - Special Issue Doog Tribute The special issue, significantly produced for the Hull match, a special tribute to Derek Dougan has sold extremely well, but Charles still has some copies. See a seller outside the ground or contact <aloadofbull@blueyonder.co.uk> or at ALOB, PO Box 3483, Birmingham, B17 9SF. Don't forget also that Charles welcomes Wolves related articles for ALoB. Send them to the same addresses. If you’d like a copy of the order of service you can download that from the London Wolves website at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/the_doog.html and you can see that hat trick from March 25th 1969. If you want to see the service, the BBC archive service has 45 minutes out of the 75 on their Black Country website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/avdb/regions/west_midlands/video/104000/bb/104482_16x9_bb.asx or you can see 1hour and 5 minutes on the DVD. Finally, I've had a few problems with the website (the ticker-news just stopped for example) but the refurbishment is continuing. Apologies for any inconvenience. Up the Wolves!! --------August 2007 - Doog, funeral and tributes; Callum meets Matt Murray, Stef, AGM mins------- Hi everyone at last the season has started again, even if the live televised match didn't give us the result we needed.... but there's scope to emulate the Royals from two seasons ago especially after Sunday's gritty performance against the Owls! I thought Seyi's flick for the first goal against Watford was worthy of the Doog himself, who was saluted before the match. The announcer only got to "323 appearances and 123 goals" before the team and crowd were applauding....
A Load of Bull - Special Issue Doog Tribute The next issue, hopefully and significantly planned for the Hull match, will be a special tribute to Derek Dougan. If you'd like to contribute to this special issue then send your material to Charles Ross by September 3rd by email or royalmail From: aloadofbull <aloadofbull@blueyonder.co.uk> Send your submissions to this email or via snailmail at ALOB, PO Box 3483, Birmingham, B17 9SF Doog Funeral & Tributes Dave Hodges, Dave Slape, Robert Goddard, Alan Taylor and I attended the funeral service to represent London Wolves, while Irish member, and friend of Doog's, Vinny Coates flew in from Dublin that morning and was interviewed on BBC Midlands Today. You can see more of the funeral - over half of it is available as a webcast from the BBC. There is a link to that and other footage on our Doog page together with your tributes plus a short video of that debut hat trick Doog arrived in Wolverhampton in March 1967. At the time I was co-editing the college newspaper, The Marble, and a couple of the budding journalists had been hanging around Molineux hoping to interview one of the stars when they found this “tall thin guy walking round trying to find his way in”. Like all good hacks, they offered to show him the way in return for an interview. And the Doog, gracious as ever, gave them one. This exclusive was reprinted in the Express & Star as that week on March 16th Ronnie Allen signed Doog for £50,000. Two days later he was away at Plymouth, but, curiosity aroused, I had to go to the ground to see the home debut. That hat trick and one from Knocker sealed a 4-0 win on the way to promotion. Since I’d seen him arrive, I had to see him leave too. Doog made a spectacular arrival at the church in a gold and black coffin, with the Wolves emblem “Doog” and number 10 (although he started as #9 of course) – anyone who says he didn’t care about the Wolves proved wrong there and then. His coffin carried wreaths from Merlyn in Northern Ireland colours and in gold and black from WWLSC. Doog fell in love with Wolverhampton – he died at home in Tettenhall – so it was appropriate to start with “Bring him Home” from Les Miz. His pallbearers were his brother Dale, Phil Nicholls, sons Alex and Nick and former Wolves Vice Chairman Doug Hope plus our best winger ever, Dave Wagstaffe. Waggy said that, “of course, he’d volunteered to play left wing” (from where he’d supplied many of Doog’s goals), but on realising that the other pallbearers were taller and all the weight would be on him “dropped back into midfield”. Just eighteen months earlier Doog had carried his friend George Best to his grave – saying “George Best carried so many teams I was in that it was a pleasure to carry him today.” Typical of Doog’s generous spirit and wit. Chief minder inside the church was Frank Munro, who told the story of a Scotland v NI match, when the Doog went in hard on him. “He chased me for 20 yards and just hacked me down. Hey, Doog, what’re you doing, we’ve got a big game against Arsenal on Saturday?” “Matey, there’s no friends in this game” was Derek’s reply. This was a funeral which clearly was a celebration of his life with a packed church inside and out. Nick Owen, BBC WM, told how Doog had befriended him and helped him as a young journalist, and Wolves’ mighty skipper of the 70s, Mike Bailey described his career and impact on the team. From Terry Conroy – his great friend at Stoke City – who talked about how easy it was Doog and Peter Dobing to “pull the birds” at Blackpool with Doog’s Jag, of the All Ireland match against Brazil at the height of The Troubles, and of Doog being the original skinhead when he shaved his head at Aston Villa. Terry concluded with “Finally I can see him up there with St Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter would welcome Doog ‘cos he’d know him, wouldn’t he, who wouldn’t? He’d say ‘these are the terms of the contract for entering the Kingdom’. Doog would say ‘Wait, now I tell you Peter, that’s not the way to do it. You listen to me and you won’t go far wrong. I won’t lead you astray’”. Villa’s current manager, Martin O’Neill, also a player in that match against Brazil, represented the people of Northern Ireland – and spoke of how extraordinary the iconoclastic Doog was, although claiming he called him Seamus! “Abide with Me” and “Danny Boy” were sung with gusto inside and outside the church, and a recording of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was followed from outside by “What’s his name – Dougan, What’s his name – Dougan” and “Hey Doog” (to Hey Jude) before Doog’s partner Merlyn Humphreys spoke her own tribute… Unforgettable Doog (follows this) and followed by Nat King Cole’s original of the song he loved to sing – yes, he was a singer too. Then it was a stirring composition introduced by Doog’s son Nick and written and performed by Doog’s elder son Alex called “Praise the Lord” – in the churchlight Nick, unnervingly, looked just like Doog himself standing there. The Rev’d David Frith talked of Doog’s thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity and his role in improving the life of footballers everywhere who worked in a different economic climate so different from today's. In the 60s and 70s the names of Derek Dougan and Wolverhampton Wanderers were inseparable and Wolverhampton became his home. He was hugely proud of his Belfast roots but deeply pained by the hatreds and tragedies of his homeland. “I believe he was an unsung hero of peace and reconciliation” he said. And then it was time for Doog’s last journey, with one last farewell to Molineux. Was it just amazing timing that the front and inside pages of the E&S carried the Doog story, while the back page announced that another prolific striker Freddy Eastwood had signed. Wolves were represented by Manager Mick McCarthy, VP Rachael Heyhoe Flint and Graham Hughes amongst others. An opportunity to see some of the greatest players of the 60s and 70s – from Dennis Law and Pat Jennings, to the Pompey player who used to clean Doog’s boots! Those there included Pat Jennings, Sammy Nelson, Johnny Giles, Denis Law, Billy Bingham, Martin O'Neill, Graham Williams, Chico Hamilton, Ron Wylie, Gordon Taylor, Terry Conroy, Brandon Batson, Mickey Evans and Chris Nicholl. While from Molineux, most of the players from the 60s were there – Lofty, Waggy, etc – the full list was Les Wilson (who flew in from Canada), Dave Wagstaffe (who acted as a pall bearer) Jim McCalliog, John McAlle, Derek Parkin, Phil Parkes, Mike Bailey, Geoff Palmer, Mel Eves, Malcolm Finlayson, former manager Sammy Chung, Frank Munro, Terry Wharton, Barry Powell, John Holsgrove, Dave Burnside, Ernie Hunt, Martin Patching, Bobby Thomson, Gerry Taylor, Gordon Cowans, Peter McParland and, of course, The Doog was there with us. Doog spent much of his life quietly helping others. The back page of the order of service has him pictured as chairman of Xpro an organisation helping formed footballers who have never had the security of today’s players. He had just, after months of negotiation, completed a case for Norman Uprichard, the ex-Arsenal and Portsmouth goalkeeper, to receive compensation for an injury picked up in the 1958 season. Most of us last saw him at a dinner he’d arranged for Ian “Iggy” Cartwright who played for the Wolves in 84 but now fighting cancer without help from Dudley health – so Iggy should have the last word “God bless you Derek, you were a true friend, me and my family will miss you and will never forget the help you gave us, thanks for all your love and support xx” We got a brief chat with Dennis Law who said that, on Sunday 24th he’d been clearing some stuff out and a found a picture of himself with Doog. He didn’t know he’d just died. Spooky, but how spooky will it be if AloB can get this out for the Hull game and Andy Keogh, today’s number 9, gets a hat trick, from crosses from today’s Waggy, Michael Kightly? Additional information If you’d like a copy of the order of service you can download that from the London Wolves website at http://www.londonwolves.com/html/the_doog.html and you can see that hat trick from March 25th 1969. If you want to see the service, the BBC archive service has 45 minutes out of the 75 on their Black Country website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/avdb/regions/west_midlands/video/104000/bb/104482_16x9_bb.asx Unforgettable Doog - Merlyn Humphreys Doog's partner Merlyn gave this lovely speech at the funeral:+ Remembering Derek You can shed tears that Doog has gone or you can smile because he lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back or you can open them and see all that he has left. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see him, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember Doog and only that he has gone, or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind and feel utter emptiness, or you can do what Doog would want - smile, love him and go on. Unforgettable Doog. A man of considerable charisma, presence and enthusiasm. What the heart has once known it shall never forget. We will never forget. and this was followed by Nat King Cole's Unforgettable which Doog used to sing. Player of the Season presentation by Callum Reed
Michael Kightly and England U21 (ed Kightsdid start for U21) Tonight, Tuesday 21st August, hopefully we'll see the next Wolves player to play for England at least for part of the match against Romania from Ashton Gate. It kicks off at 7:45pm on Sky Sports 2. Many congratulations to Kights. There is a nice write up on the FA.COM website (reproduced on WWLSC - just follow the links from the front page) talking about his rise from non-League football. Congratulations too to Freddy Eastwood and Wales' number one Wayne Hennessey for their call ups against Bulgaria, while Seyi jetted off to play for Nigeria and Andy Keogh and Darren Potter are in the Irish squad (Stephen Elliott pulled out). It's Morecambe in the Carling Cup; Baggies and Cardiff date changes So the victory over Bradford City gave us a home draw against "giantkillers" Morecambe (who have knocked Preston out in the first round). Fortunately Mick seems to take these matches a little more seriously than we have in the past, and with more competition for places, we're expecting a strong performance. The WBA away match is now Sunday 25th November at midday and the Cardiff away has been moved to Wednesday 24th October at 19:45. Wolves in Pictures by Dave Instone Dave managed to update the book to cover Doog's untimely death before it went to print. It covers the post war period up to the end of 2006-7 season. There's an order form on our site to order from the publishers or it'll be on sale in the Wolves shop from September 1st. TREASURER’S REPORT
----------------July 2007 - Match reports Dec 06 - May 07, Meet the players--------------------- Hi everyone
Well the last two weeks were rather overshadowed by the Doog’s sudden and unexpected death. Our thoughts are with Merlyn, Nick, Alexander and Jutta and young Alex. London Wolves attended the service and wake, and reports are on the website. Merlyn told us that she had decided to place her wreath in green and white for NI and ours in Gold and Black on the Doog’s coffin – which was in Wolves colours with number 10 and Doog on the side. Doog was our president since 1968 then becoming Life President as he rejoined his on-pitch partnership with John Richards. Unfortunately our end of season newsletter had just been posted by Dave so we weren’t able to update it. Your email copy is attached.
Don’t forget the AGM is in three weeks time – 28th July 2007 15:00 again at the Brockley Social Club 240-242 Brockley Road, London, SE4 2SU There’s a link to a map on the website
The Doog Travel details for August/Sep 1 AGM New Book by David Instone Fundraising: Iggy/Geoff/Phil 2006-7 End of Season Newsletter
The Doog
Nick Owen, Terry Conroy, Mike Bailey and Martin O’Neill all spoke of Doog. A chorus of “You’ll never Walk Alone” was followed by cries of “What’s his name – Dougan” and a chorus of “Hey Doog” from the 300 odd crowd outside the church. Doog’s son Alexander sang one of his own compositions and the congregation included many fans in the church and outside. There were many famous faces from Gordon Taylor and Brendan Batson to Pat Jennings and Dennis Law as well as many of Doog’s contempories from the 60’s and 70’s Wolves teams, including Les Wilson who flew in from Canada and Waggy who said he volunteered to play left wing carrying the coffin but moved back into left midfield! Doog would have liked that. Mick McCarthy and Rachael Heyhoe Flint represented Molinuex, who also hosted the wake. Frank Munro was one of the greeters and we were fortunate to meet one of Dodges’ heroes Dennis Law. Dennis told me that on that Sunday he’d been clearing out some stuff and found a picture of himself with Doog. He didn’t hear the news until the following day. Doog’s son Nick, looking for all the world as though the Doog was standing in the Church, wanted to ensure that the fans could get hold of copies of the order of service so we have scanned one and you can view and download it from the picture on the front page of the website or from The Doog page. If you would like to listen to the service (only up to Merlyn’s eulogy for some reason known only to the BBC), you can access it here http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/avdb/regions/west_midlands/video/104000/bb/104482_16x9_bb.asx

-----------------------------Iggy’s dinner-----------------------
-----------------------------13 February 07--------------------------- Hi everyone
Well, the best performance of the season at Deepdale where pacemakers Preston were outclassed, especially by our strikers! First of all, though, a big thank you to Mick McCarthy and Derek Dougan for the support to Iggy Cartwright’s fundraising. We have pictures from the event where Gordon Banks OBE was the guest of honour and more will be on the website. Secondly, here’s a message from Ian to London Wolves….
----- Message from "iggy.cartwright" on Sun, 11 Feb 2007 16:46:06 -0000 -----
Hello everyone at London Wolves. Just want to say a big 'Thankyou' to you all for all the support you have given me and my family. If there are better supporters of a football club in the country, I would like to know where they are. You travelled up from London, and gave me huge support on the night. I was overwhelmed by everyones help and best wishes. It made me very proud, and I am glad that everybody had a great evening. Thanks again for all your help, and I look forward to seeing you all in the near future. P.S. What a great result yesterday !!! Many Thanks, and my very best wishes to you all. Ian Cartwright In this issue:
Mick McCarthy Stefan had told Mick we were coming up for Iggy’s dinner and Mick called in to the Connaught to say hello, but, most importantly to deliver a cheque for £1,000 from himself and the first team players. What a great gesture which Stef was able to announce at the dinner. One ex player bumped in to Mick and came in saying “wasn’t that the Wolves Manager”. Mick stayed for a pint and a chat and we were all impressed by his frankness and the way he’s going about things. An evening with Gordon Banks OBE in aid of the Iggy Cartwright fund Section removed - see above Details of how you can donate are also on this page. here
Win a History of Wolves DVD competition Thanks to everyone who entered and supported Iggy’s fundraising. The winners were Steven Rock from Telford who wrote to Ian “As a kid I got your autograph during a training session we came to see in the early 80s. I won a competition through the Shropshire Star to meet some players and tour Molineux, etc. Was one of my great childhood memories. Good luck with the fundraising - such a worthy cause.” And the ubiquitous Robert Goddard (honestly! He was drawn by Ian on the night). Robert had already received a copy as a Christmas present so generously donated the DVD to Iggy’s fundraising and raised another £30. The winners also received a certificate signed by Iggy, Gordon Banks, the Doog and all the other players. We’d like to thank the support given by the Wolves fans forums at The Wolf, Gavin’s Wolves site, and Molineux Mix who are at http://www.wolvesfansite.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=6 and http://www.molineuxmix.co.uk/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=2
Neil Edwards Loitering in the bar before the dinner Neil, who was one of Iggy’s contemporaries, joined us for a pint. He was instantly recognised by Peter W but he had to ask his name! Looking well and fit, Neil has promised to keep in touch. Pic will be on the website.
Sporting Star Saturday 10th February Thanks to Mark Douglas the E&S Wolves reporter for including mention of Iggy’s dinner in the SS while the lads were dominating Preston away. Apart from his subeditor moving the Connaught from Wolverhampton to London it was a good ad for Iggy.
John Lalley also wrote about the new strikers, the new Andy and Steve – Andy Keogh and Stephen Ward, comparing the instant hit that the Doog had with the fans (March 67 Dougan 3, Knowles 1, Hull 0)

Meet the Players 2007 Stef is hoping that this will take place in a well known AGM venue in Streatham after the match against Palace 14th April. It will be some time before this can be confirmed, though, since, if we’re in a dogfight for a top 6 place though, Mick may want to take the players straight home but please make a note in your diary.
Want to stay in touch with Wolverhampton & the Wolves? The Express & Star has gone on-line again with a much enhanced facility. It’s more expensive at £1.50 a pop if you buy individual copies of the E&S or Sporting Star. If you subscribe though it gets much better value...£15 for the season’s package of Sporting Stars and £10 per month (I think) for the E&S. To save pages you’ll need to print or have a pdf generator to “print” to. You can also subscribe to the print edition of course through normal subscriptions. You have to set up a login id and payment system from here http://es.inewspaper.co.uk/starviewerES/starviewes/index.asp

Matchday Mag Roy Eagles appeared with his family in the magazine for the home match against Southend while Stan Armett’s question to Moxey about the Cardiff fans ban also appeared.
Fan Chants We got this from Michael Dennis. Anyone who recorded the hour after the cup match loss to Watford last season could set him up well! There are some here which he has http://wolves.soccer24-7.com/chants.html Not sure whether he’s got “Sold Out – to the Albion – sold out” before attacking Jez Moxey, which seems to be the South Bank’s opening shots unless Mick has changed their minds. Me, I was going to listen on the internet but I complained about the awful service that Wolves and Premium TV have provided this season – with Australians getting up in the middle of the night and no commentary coming on – in spite of Wolves advertising “listen to every game live”. So they didn’t read my complaint properly, issued a refund and cut me off. Great! Well it means I can go and watch for the next Michael Kightly at mighty Farnborough Town (yes he played there) in the FA Trophy!
------------------------------24 Dec 06---------------------------- Merry Christmas everyone! And a happy New Year! And a special thanks and best wishes to the linesman, sorry ref’s assistant, who didn’t see that our two players were three yards offside at the free kick – even I could see it - which led to Karl Henry’s great first goal for the Wolves and for flagging against Dion Dublin. And you can read the exclusive interview in this edition. Stef also went to the AllStars match in aid of Ian Cartwright and writes about that too. ------------------------------23 Nov 06---------------------------- Well, since the Christmas decorations went up in my local today I suppose it’s time for a pre-Christmas issue! We’ve received a few offers from companies selling Wolves merchandise so here they are. If you’re really ambitious though, you could put Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on your Christmas list – just £20million! We also heard from the Doog, who’s trying to help Ian Cartwright who played for the Wolves in the 80s. In this issue Sir Jack calls in to Radio WM about selling Wolves SJH First on your Christmas list should be a loan of just £20 million pounds so you can buy the Wolves! While some of you were still rejoicing at Jody’s 89th minute equaliser at St Andrews, Radio WM commentator Paul “Franksy” Franks had been saying the Haywards had lost interest in Wolves, it was time for them to move on and it was also time for them to clarify what the £40m purchase price would buy. Meanwhile, at home in the Bahamas, SJH had been listening and got wound up enough to call the post match phone in to set the record straight! He’d been up since dawn listening to the commentary and hadn’t lost interest but said if a buyer came in he’d be prepared to sell. All the money would go into the club, not to him. And probably £40 million was unrealistic now, perhaps £20 million. He hoped it would be people who cared about Wolves though. He also admitted a dalliance with the people who were trying to buy West Ham – presumably Joorabchian’s consortium – since the Club said it wasn’t the Icelandic group, but "fortunately" that had come to nothing. If Milan Mandaric were to contact him he would be happy to speak. It would also seem a better deal since the money would go into the club rather than to shareholders as would happen if he took over Leicester. He certainly hoped that Matt Murray would stay, saying he was a really nice man with a lovely family, and the Club had looked after him very well during his periods of injury. Money is available for Mick in January - but you'd have to ask Jez Moxey how much. Money had been made available to him already but he had done a really great job on loans. He reminded WM that Mick had been appointed by him and Jez Moxey And Franksy? Well obviously pleased that his comments had finally provoked a reaction, but clearly a bit embarrassed by the call, asking the next caller whether he’d told Sir Jack he should go. “Yes, Fransky, you did”. Well done Franksy though – after announcements that the Club was up for sale, then straight denials that it ever was, at least we heard from the horse’s mouth for a change. So. if all the Season Ticket holders got together with £1500 each we could own the club! Then, of course, there are a raft of less expensive shopping opportunities so that you can spend Christmas Day still with the Wolves since there’s no match between the 23rd and the 26th! We’ve information on some of the best in the rest of this eNews. “The Doog” You’ll all be pleased to hear that Derek is up and about again. For all of us who missed him at our 40th Dinner in July, you’ll be delighted to hear that his broken foot/ankle is healing well and he’s lost none of his fire. He said again how sorry he was to have missed it. Part of the problem was a break which happened when he was playing for Portsmouth! The Doog is looking forward to March 16th next year – his own 40th anniversary of joining the Wolves. But, as well as XPRO, www.xpro.org , he is very busy trying to help with fundraising for ex-Wolf Iggy Cartwright…… Ian “Iggy” Cartwright WWFC 1980-6
Ian is only 42, being born in 1964. He joined Wolves when he left school, turning pro in 1982. Over the next 4 years he made 61 appearances, scoring two goals, Here is an article Former Wolves player Ian ‘iggy’ Cartwright is fighting Cancer. Ian signed for Wolves as a teenager and played between 1982 & 1986 making over 70 1st team appearances. Ian was signed as apprentice to former manager John Barnwell. He has been working all year on a fantastic souvenir DVD. “Steve Bull - Now and Then” is a fascinating insight into Bully as he is now - business man, family man and newly appointed Honorary Vice President of the club he has loyally served for two decades - and his thoughts on how he was then - as a player for one of English football’s most famous clubs. Mixing archive footage of some of Steve’s best goals with the definitive Bully interview, this essential release for football fans everywhere provides a glimpse of a footballer’s life after the final whistle has blown. The cameras have been following Bully around from the press launch of his anniversary year to the anniversary match itself, a pre-season game between Wolves and local rivals Aston Villa. Footage of Bully at work and with family and friends culminates with exclusive footage of his last 10 minutes as a footballer on the hallowed turf of Molineux and Steve’s take on the injury that forced him off the pitch and will mean he will not play football again. (WWLSC match report and pictures of Bully are here http://www.londonwolves.com/html/preseason.html#bully ). The DVD documents Steve’s working life with his own events company and as an ambassador for Wolves, his tireless work as Patron for Wolverhampton based children’s charity Promise Dreams, his leisure time with family and friends. For those of you who didn’t make it to Charlton you missed a superb evening in the presence of great Wolves players who are also really nice people. Special thanks go to Terry Wharton who persuaded most of them to come. The Players: Hughie McIlmoyle, Ernie Hunt, John Holsgrove, “Waggy” Dave Wagstaffe, Gerry Taylor, Frank Munro (seated) Graham Hawkins, Terry Wharton, Fred Davies, Bobby Thomson, and Mike Bailey, This eNews is taken from the website where there are many more pictures, including messages from Mick McCarthy and SJH as well as John Richards’ speech http://www.londonwolves.com/html/40th.html#LW40 as well as an update from the AGM http://www.londonwolves.com/html/social_events.html#AGM06 The timing on Saturday was slightly awry, since new manager Mick McCarthy was flying back that evening, otherwise we may have had the chance to share a pint, but he did send his best wishes through and said how delighted he was to be managing Wolves. Our best wishes go to Honorary Life President Derek Dougan, who has broken bones in his foot, but still tried to get down to London. Mick has already started getting players in - Gui Finkler (there’s a link to his cracking free kick in Garry’s News on the site), Gary Breen and Jay Bothroyd (no we didn’t kidnap him from Charlton on Saturday!). So it’ll be a different team we see – starting with the trip to Molineux to Honorary Member Steve Bull’s testimonial on Saturday – with Bully wearing the number 9. Congratulations, too, to Steve on being made an Honarary Vice President of Wolves. Dave will be sending copies of Phil’s outstanding 40th Anniversary newsletter to members who did not attend in the next mailing within 2-3 weeks. You’ll see it in the pictures of the tables at The Valley. Diners were also given a reproduction of the Plymouth programme. You will also be asked about what you want to see in the future on the newsletter front. Beware, not replying, will make the choice “electronic only”. We have also the opportunity to run a fantasy football league of our own. 50% of the money raised will go to the winner. If you’re interested please tell Dave or email me. There’ll also be a Goalden Gate draw form – you could win £1000 as Roy did. If you would like higher resolution pictures of those on the website drop me a note with the photo id (right click, then properties will give a filename.jpg) you would like emailing. If you don’t see a picture you want, I do have some others of lower quality taken off the movie tape. LONDON WOLVES 40th anniversary Dinner The Players (pictured above): Hughie McIlmoyle, Ernie Hunt, John Holsgrove, “Waggy” Dave Wagstaffe, Gerry Taylor, Frank Munro (seated) Graham Hawkins, Terry Wharton, Fred Davies, Bobby Thomson, and Mike Bailey Some 150 members, ex-players and guests enjoyed a tremendously nostalgic evening at The Valley, thanks to Charlton Athletic Football Club, to celebrate the Wolverhampton Wanderers London Supporters' Club's 40th Anniversary. Although the members were already getting together, it was 22nd October 1966 when we first arranged travel to a home Wolves match - with Wolves winning 2-1 against Plymouth Argyle. In celebration 8 of the players from that match joined us - Fred Davies, goalkeeper, Bobby Thomson, left back, Mike Bailey, right half, Terry Wharton, right winger, Ernie Hunt, inside forward and scorer of the winning goal, Hughie McIlmoyle, centre forward, left winger, Waggy, David Wagstaffe and substitute Graham Hawkins (who later became the last manager of Wolves to gain automatic promotion to the top flight). Although not playing in that match two other important 66-67 promotion team members Gerry Taylor (full back) and John Holsgrove (defender) also joined us together with Frank Munro, a member of the 67 First Division side and promotion and League Cup winner in the 70s. WWLSC's President, goal scoring legend and former Managing Director of the Wolves, "King" John Richards represented the next generation of Wolves as he was still at school when that match was played! For the evening, the Valley's Millennium Suite was a sea of gold and black, with balloons carrying the London Wolves current and 40th anniversary badges. Each participant was given a reproduction of the Plymouth match programme, with the menu of Van Dyke Melon, Supreme of Chicken, and a large cream gateau printed in the centre pages. Tower Press and Digiprinters did a terrific job in providing the programme, tickets, place markers and a unique 40th Anniversary magazine (which will be sent to all members) produced by Phil O'Connor. Phil assembled pictures, match reports, anecdotes, and player profiles from London Wolves past - including the famous report showing teenage London Wolves in the North Bank. The players and their partners were our guests at the Ibis, and made a great entrance to the dinner. They were introduced by John Engleman one at a time to thunderous applause while compere Anthony Davies read out their Wolves records. Ernie, perhaps promoting his Joker in the Pack book, made his appearance in a Wolves wig! He looked nearly young enough to help fill that left wing vacancy in today’s squad! Stuart Earl, Chairman, opened his speech by referring back to the '68 North Bank picture saying many had told him he hadn't aged from then but Ernie Hunt was quick to point out that the people who'd said that must have been blind. So quickly on to the thank yous.
The Express & Star ran an article last week about “Capital Wolves celebrating”. That led to a phone call from a Peter Kull who had bad memories of that match when only 9 years old he had been injured when a player landed on him in the crowd (yes, it was that close then), and asked Stoo to pass on his “thanks” to Terry Wharton!! 38 years ago Derek Dougan wrote “I do hope the London Supporters’ Club will be following us up and down he country for many years to come” and Stoo pointed out that for a group of disorganised teenagers WWLSC had done fairly well! It’s done that because of the hard work of members, especially founder committee members such as Dave Slape. (Ed Doog’s letter is on the website just after the 40th pictures.) We’d seen the players in the room 40 years ago and they were our heroes – and still are. And Stuart thanked them again for helping to make Wolves and our club special saying it made him proud to be Chairman. Stuart handed the mike to Stef Leonard who had had a phone call from Mick McCarthy, appointed manager of Wolves the day before.
Stef had invited him along, if only for a beer, if his flight back from Portugal was in time. Mick said he wished he could have been with us but was at Faro travelling back and then going up to Molineux. But there will be opportunities in the future. He is absolutely thrilled and delighted to be managing Wolves and can’t wait to start. Stef had tried to persuade him to come to us when he left the Ireland job. Stuart finished his speech by sending the Doog’s apologies. Unfortunately our Life President, Derek "The Doog" Dougan, is suffering from a broken foot, and tried desperately to attend, but was unable to make it. We wish him a speedy recovery. Doog sent a brilliant picture to be auctioned. These will be available to purchase from Xpro. He also wished to be remembered to everyone, especially the players he knew and played with. Stoo had also received a “fax” (!!!) from Sir Jack which read: Thank you so much for your wonderful support over the last 40 years! Congratulations to every member of London Wolves for such devotion to our Club. You were founded in 1966 – an historic year for football in England. Let us hope we at Wolves can give you cause for further celebrations this season and in the future. I am so sorry I cannot be with you – but rest assured I am enormously grateful to you all for your superb loyalty – it is very much appreciated. Best Wishes Sir Jack Hayward John Richards “with 5 minutes notice” spoke on behalf of the players. He thanked Stuart for arranging a hotel with no bar! Addressing London Wolves he said we always make the players feel so welcome. There is always an important relationship between former players, current players and the supporters. “The supporters are paramount because you are the loyal ones, more so now.” “You’re not going to get loyalty from the directors, the players but you stay – you are loyal – for 40 years.” “We have some real stalwarts of the club in this room. People like Mike Bailey, our Captain. Wolves haven’t seen a captain like him since. Nor,” he added, “an inside right like Ernie Hunt”. (Ernie pointed out that Mike still owed him two quid.) “The former players do like to meet, it’s two years since we last did, and it’s specially good to see Ernie and John Holsgrove who we don’t see that often. It’s because of you that we are able to meet.” “These players are the older generation though and you should have had some players for the younger generation of fans” (Ed: we did invite some current squad but the pre-season at Swansea clashed). The club should have sent more representatives too. I hope you get support from the club – you deserve it. “So, on behalf of the players. You’ve looked after us, you always do. We’re going to have a fabulous night here tonight. “But not in the bar back at the Ibis!” A short break and it was on to the auctions, raffles, etc. Amongst other items – 2x retro shirts signed by the players attending tonight, 2x2005-6 squad signed shirts, footballs, some Ferrero Rocher, a DVD player, wine, a gallon of whisky, and thanks to Cliff Egan from Wolves, a box for 8 at a home game at Molineux. The auctions and raffles raised a massive £1295 for the club's coffers. Finally holiday stays in Thailand and the Bahamas were won by Danielle, and by Annette and Tony. And to round off the weekend, some of the players enjoyed a leisurely cruise from Greenwich to Westminster on the Sunday morning. London Wolves 40th Anniversary photographs. If you would like a higher resolution copy of any picture please email me at webmaster@londonwolves.com If you move the cursor over the picture it should show you a picture filename. email the same if you would like a picture removed from the site for any reason. The players’ entrance - first goalkeeper Fred Davies. 173 appearances and followed by Bobby Thomson, left full back with 299 appearances and 3 goals. Wonder midfielder captain Mike Bailey who lifted the League Cup appeard 432 times scoring 25 goals and, of course, felt at home at the Valley too. Another tough midfielder Terry Wharton followed him. Terry scored 79 goals in his 241 appearancs. Center forward Hughie McIlmoyle who set us on the way in the 66 promotion before departing for Bristol scored an amazing 45 goals in 104 appearances. Defender Gerry Taylor didn’t play against Plymouth but was a key member of the promotion team and made 192 appearances, scoring one goal. Ernie Hunt, one of the best inside forwards we ever saw played 82 times scoring 35. Page further down for his famous donkey kick when at Coventry. Graham Hawkins was substitute for the Plymouth match, and made 28 appearances, but, of course, he managed Wolves to automatiic promotion 22 years ago. Another tough centre half Frank Munro joined Wolves in the season back in the top flight and went on to 371 appearances with 19 goals. John Holsgrove flew in from Spain to be with us and was another 66-67 promotion winner making 202 appearances with 7 goals. Finally, London Wolves Honorary President John Richards. “King John” was still at school in 66, but, until Bully came along was Wolves record scorer with 194 goals in 486 appearances. John later became Managing Director of Wolves. John was followed by WWLSC Chairman and host for the evening Stuart Earl.
SPONSORS of THE DINNER DANCE: Thanks were given to sponsors of the event - Roy Eagles, John Engleman, Dave Slape, Dave Hodges, and Roy Bowdler as well as OceanShade.com, Tower Press and Digiprinters, and Chaucer Consulting. Know The Score Books (Simon Lowe) presented the Match of My Life books for our competitions. Special thanks are due to Richard Collins, Charlton Board Director for all his assistance in securing such an excellent venue (and for allowing it to be turned Gold and Black for the evening. Thanks also to the dinner committee: John Engleman, Stef Leonard, Dave Hodges, Phil O’Connor with assistance from Stuart Earl. We hope to get Sunday’s river boat trip pictures with the Players from Greenwich Pier to Westminster on the website. AGM 2006 pictures on the web http://www.londonwolves.com/html/social_events.html#AGM06 Around 20 members again enjoyed the hospitality of the Brockley Social Club for the London Wolves AGM when once again Cliff Egan was our guest of honour. Cliff concluded the meeting by talking about the many things going on at Molineux and sending Jez Moxey’s best wishes. Prior to the Chairman’s address Stuart drew Phil O’Connor’s name out of the hat for the Match of My Life - England World Cup book. Rob Goddard and George Sinagra were the only other all correct entries from WWLSC. Stuart, after reading out apologies, passed around the London Wolves trademark certificate which was granted earlier in the year. It was recorded that Barry Baker had given WWLSC the limited company London Wolves Ltd as well as the trademark, a gesture which was much appreciated and cost him a lot of money. Secretary: Dave Slape reported that we have currently 248 members on the books and reported on the promotional item sales. The 40th badges should be available at The Valley. Cliff Egan added to Dave’s report about the revenue generated by the Goalden Gate draw - £508 last year and reminded members to sign up. Travel: Peter Woodifield was still on vacation but sent in his report. The Virgin service has improved but the remote bookings service is still causing difficulties The only delayed trip was to Norwich where the train was cancelled and a refund has been gained. The club is still owed £175 by ex-members. Peter also asked that if a member can’t make a trip that Top attendances were Preston (50) and Hull (48) at home and Sheffield (37) and Hull away. No details are yet available on fares for next season. We have 7 season tickets and 2 away seasons bought on the Early Bird scheme. Peter thanked Dave, Guy, Maurice and Pam in the WWFC ticket office; the AGM thanked Peter for all his hard work Treasurer’s Report is on the web Election of Officers. Sadly David Hodges has decided to resign from the Committee. Stuart proposed that he was not replaced as Rob Goddard was seconded on earlier in the year. The Committee was re-elected. Membership Fee unchanged
Newsletter. Christmas and end of season issues were published as per the members’ wishes at last year’s AGM. Interim e-newsletters were also sent (mailed to members without internet access). Since some members had requested more the whole membership will be asked what they want. (see communication) Membership communication. Members will receive a package shortly asking whether they want a printed magazine or to view it on the internet. (We don’t have email addresses for around 100 members). Not replying will be taken as asking for Internet only). Also included will be Goalden Gate enrolment forms. We also have the opportunity to run our own Fantasy League. Anyone interested in participating please email me here. Probably £10 - winner takes half the pot. We’ll also ask this question in the member communication. Entertainments - John Engleman - 40th Dinner Dance. (See above!) Cliff Egan: Cliff is Wolves’ Corporate Development Manager reporting to Jez and is also Wolves’ representative to WWLSC and attended the 40th Dinner. Cliff had spoken to Jez Moxey en route who asked that his best wishes were passed on to London Wolves. He said thank you for the fans who make the effort to support Wolves home and away - and for their friendship to the Club. Cliff emphasised the £500 gain to London Wolves from the Goalden Gate draw (£4.33 a month(?)) and Roy emphasised the benefits of winning! A question was asked about the make up of the Wolves Parliament. (Details of members and David Instone’s notes of the first meeting are on our site here. Wolves are very keen to extend fan dialogues and this is an important part of that. The membership was by nomination (or self nomination) and the membership was then selected independently of Wolves. If you have issues to be raised you can take it up with any member (eg Chris Cox of Daventry). Cliff repeated Jez’s comments about the rumours of Milan Mandaric taking over the Club, and reminded us that SJH had written off £38m in loans so that any takeover by a committed well financed fan could happen. Another question about the manager appointment revealed that about 12 of the many candidates were serious possibilities but they were working on this every day. Paul Ince is certainly in the frame but Jez is also trying to get his player contract sorted, and that is a separate matter. (Paul has has the opportunity to put his views on what needs dping to Rick Hayward (’see Garrys News)) Jez is also stressing the culture change at the Club and that the Youth and Academy set up look good for the future. There are cutbacks on both sides of the Club but they were needed. Please note: these are not the official minutes Here’s to the new season Up the Wolves Peter
