Wolverhampton Wanderers' Michael Kightly has won the FourFourTwo Young Player of the Year Award for the Coca-Cola Football League at the 2008 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo's Top 50 Football League Players. The 22-year-old Wolves midfielder received the accolade as a result of being ranked 3rd in the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players which was announced on the night. This made him the highest ranked under-21 representative, and as a result, the FourFourTwo Young Player of the Year for the Coca-Cola Football League. Commenting on the 2008 Football League Awards, The Football League Chairman, Lord Mawhinney, said: "For the third consecutive year, The Football League Awards has been an enormous success. Once again, it has given us the opportunity to recognise and reward the outstanding contributions made by fans, clubs and players to the continued growth and development of league football." The number one spot in the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players went to West Bromwich Albion striker, Kevin Phillips, followed by Andy Gray of Charlton Athletic and Michael Kightly of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Darren joined us from Palace on a three year deal 3rd July 2007. Th Wolves are poised to make a bid for Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott – even if they land top target Freddy Eastwood. Mick McCarthy is keen on a reunion with the 23-year-old forward, who he helped mould into one of the Championship’s most feared strikers after picking him up from Manchester City reserves. So far Wolves interest has not extended beyond informal enquiries – but that is set to change with a formal offer this week. Elliott was a revelation during McCarthy’s tenure at the Stadium of Light – and a main reason why Sunderland were promoted during his second season. The forward has scored 22 goals in 78 appearances for the Black Cats – but has been plagued by injuries over the last two seasons. He is now injury free but with Roy Keane in the hunt for another striker his hopes of playing next season appear slim.

Freddy Eastwood signs 4 year deal May 2008 After a disappointing season 2007-8, seemingly started when Mick McCarthy accused him of not working for the team, and publicly stated that the inept Stephen Elliott was his preferred striker, Freddy was unable to secure a starting place, most of his 4th July 2007: Moxey reports that Freddy has agreed terms and will sign a contract in the next few days although reports still suggest Charlton will up their offer. He signed on Thursday 5th July - as one great striker left this world another arrived at Molineux Wolves have had a £1million bid for Southend striker Freddy Eastwood rejected. The Molineux men have made an offer of £750,000 plus £250,000 if they are promoted next season – but the League One side said No. Southend chairman Ron Martin today confirmed a £1m offer has been tabled – but insisted their star striker isn’t for sale at any price. “I have told Wolves that Freddy isn’t for sale,” he said May 2008 - after some much more impressive performances as an impact player than expected - and a great goal at Palace and making the winner at Charlton, Kevin still didn’t make the cut and his loan from Coventry was concluded at the end of the season. Jan 2008 Wolves new boy Kevin Kyle checked into Molineux after sealing a season-long loan deal and insisted: ” I will prove my worth. ”¯ Boss Mick McCarthy swooped to sign Kyle this morning to end the striker’s nightmare spell at Coventry City and add the target man he has been chasing since the summer. After completing his medical today Kyle hailed the move as a “dream come true and said he is relishing the prospect of a clean slate at Molineux. “I’m really glad to be here, it’s a dream move. I haven’t had a smile like this since my son Max was born,”€¯ he said today. In the season that we got to the semi-finals in the FA Cup and the play-offs, I got 16 goals. Mick believed in me and gave me the opportunity to go out and prove myself. Kyle’s signing comes as a surprise, but it appears that the boss has been able to convince owner Steve Morgan that Kyle’s addition will add the finishing touch to his attacking mix. Morgan and McCarthy sat together in the directors box at Anfield last week to see Peter Crouch make a decisive impact off the bench against Villa and that may have swayed the Wolves owner’s thinking. Kyle’s goalscoring record is five goals in 27 starts for Coventry. The 26-year-old Scottish international was with McCarthy at Sunderland where he scored 19 goals in 73 starts. At 6ft 3ins he adds more height to a team now boasting six senior strikers and McCarthy will look at him as a potential impact player. he boss said today: He’ll be a big addition to the squad. Keane said “life’s too short to hold grudges”. The first result of that is Neill Collins’ loan deal. Wolves have agreed a fee with Irish side Bohemians for striker Stephen Ward. The 21-year-old impressed on trial at Molineux and boss Mick McCarthy believes he is good enough to command a place at the club. A Wolves spokesperson confirmed Ward had arrived back in the midlands on Thursday morning to complete personal terms. He said: "We have agreed the basis of the deal with Bohemians. Stephen did well in his trial with us. This is a player the manager wants to sign and we are looking forward to having talks later."
Wolves sign Andy Keogh for £500,000 Wolves finally signed Andy after the Irons needed him for last weekend’s match but he won’t be able to debut against the Baggies. Wolves have made a £500,000 bid for Scunthorpe striker Andy Keogh - and are hopeful of clinching his signature next week. Molineux chief Mick McCarthy will have to wait until after this weekend to find out if his offer for the highly coveted Iron frontman has been successful, because Scunthorpe are relying on Keogh for their top of the table League One clash with Doncaster on Saturday. But Wolves are optimistic that the 20-year-old, who turned down an improved contract offer last week, will be a Wolves player by the end of the month. McCarthy said today: “We have been in contact with Scunthorpe and I think everybody knows I have watched him. We’ll just have to see what happens now.”McCarthy hopes to add the Ireland B international and another striker to his squad before the January transfer window closes. The club were knocked back in their attempts to sign a Premiership forward on loan today, but have not given up hope of adding more players before next Sunday’s eagerley anticipated FA Cup Black Country derby against West Brom. The club lodged a bid of around £500,000 for Keogh, but may be prepared to up their offer and would also consider adding a player to sweeten the deal for the League One side. Collins has made three appearances for Wolves since first arriving at Molineux from the Black Cats in November. And Collins said: "I am delighted everything is sorted now, I have been here for a while on loan but now I can focus on the future - not just for this season but beyond that. Bob Laslett elected to WWFC Board
Whilst the small announcement in the Express and Star on Tuesday night of Bob Laslett’s appointment to the board of Wolves was in keeping with Bob’s modesty, I thought the occasion merited a more comprehensive piece. As a Wolverhampton born lifelong Wolves fan myself, I know that Directors from outside the Wolverhampton area are usually regarded with suspicion. Working with and for Bob, I can testify that Bob is the real deal when it comes to the Wolves. Bob attended the same school as Wolves legends, Peter Broadbent and Jimmy Murray, in Kent, and Wolves became, and remained, Bob’s team from the 1950’s onwards, as a result of this connection. An incident that for me sums up Bob’s lifelong passion for Wolves, came a couple of months ago when Bob, like some kid wanting to show off his new toy from Santa, excitedly summoned me into his home study to view his most prized possession, which turned out to be the complete set of 1950’s Billy Wright Soccer Books, each inscribed to him from his parents at Christmas each time they were published. The Wolves fans, if they haven’t already guessed it from the amount of support given to the Club by Chaucer, can rest assured the Wolves Board has a true fan installed as the latest member, in the shape of Bob Laslett. In many ways, it is much easier for us local fans to support the Wolves than it is for our large travelling support. As a case in point, Bob’s journey to shout the boys on, is always at least a 14 hour return trek, every game is an away game for him.

Wales 0-0 Czech Republic BBC report Euro 2008 Group D qualifier
The pre-match build-up may have been all about Giggs ending his international career to concentrate on club football, but after kick-off it was all about qualification points. The Czechs needed a win to keep pressure on Germany and the Republic of Ireland at the top of Group D. For Wales three points were imperative to keep afloat their already distant hopes of making the Euro 2008 finals. Milan Baros and Rosicky showed the Czech's intent to shoot on sight with hurried efforts that skewed wide of Hennessey's goal. The Wolves youngster was preferred to veteran Danny Coyne and, in his second international appearance, showed early poise by calmly plucking a floated free-kick out of the air.
The combination between Bellamy and Giggs still showed promise for Wales, while Jason Koumas looked lively in the home midfield. Koumas, being courted by Premiership clubs following West Brom's Championship play-off loss to Derby last week, had Cech scrambling across his goal to touch a snap-shot wide. Simon Davies' charged down shot was the last significant action of the first half, with the Czechs on top but by no means in control. Sparta Prague forward Marek Kulic replaced Baros for the Czechs after half-time but, as in the first half, it was Wales who carved out the first opportunity. Collins' deep pass sent Bellamy scampering away down the left channel and the Liverpool man cut the ball back for Giggs, only for Rozehnal to produce another fine tackle. But the Czechs' response was a cross for Koller, nodded on for Rosicky, with Sam Ricketts' saving header averting a dangerous situation. Then the woodwork came to the Czech's rescue as Koumas cannoned a free-kick off the junction of post and crossbar with Cech beaten. The Chelsea goalkeeper's next task was far more simple as Giggs failed to get enough curve on a shot and instead clipped the ball into Cech's midriff. David Jarolim replaced defender Jan Polak to support Rosicky in the visitors' midfield, the danger man who soon after blasted a free-kick against Collins. With 68 minutes on the clock Giggs picked up a loose ball on halfway and sped upfield. The 33-year-old ghosted past the first Czech defender before jinking past a second, a third, then a fourth white shirt and onto his favoured left foot. The Welsh fans were on their feet anticipating a fairytale ending only for Cech to prove the ogre of the piece, standing firm to pull of a fine save high to his right. However, the point leaves Wales on seven from six games and almost certainly out of the qualification picture. The Czech's led Group D only until Saturday evening when Germany, who still have a game in hand, beat San Marino 6-0 to top the table by two points. All good things come to an end - but, for Wayne Hennessey, his extraordinary run of clean sheets for Stockport should just be the beginning. The 20-year-old picked the ball out of the net for the first time in senior football - in his 10th match on loan from Wolves - as County lost 3-1 to Barnet on Saturday. The previous nine matches all ended in victory for Stockport without Hennessey conceding a goal - a run that set a new Football League record as well as catapulting County into the League Two promotion frame. Not bad for a rookie who had never played a first-team game before January. And after 18 months out of the game with serious knee and shoulder injuries, the 6ft 7in Welsh Under-21 international is making up for lost time. Hennessey, who was fourth-choice at Wolves, told BBC Sport: "This is my first taste of first-team football and it has whet my appetite for more. "It is a massive chance for me to show what I can do because I wasn't getting an opportunity at Wolves. Hopefully I have done that. "Being a goalkeeper you never know what is going to happen but obviously I have been delighted with the way it has gone. "It was unbelievable to break the record - it is hard to take it all in." The Bangor-born keeper is known as 'Van der Sar' by his County team-mates for his physical resemblance to Manchester United's Dutch star Edwin - they share the same elastic frame. Lowe understands lack of action Wolves defender Keith Lowe has assured Brighton manager Mark McGhee there are no hard feelings after a wasted loan spell at Withdean The 20-year-old was an unused substitute in each of the Seagulls' five League One fixtures so far this season. But after returning to Molinuex, Lowe said: "I went there to play football but, basically, I came back with what I left with. "To be fair Mark McGhee stressed he didn't get me there under false pretences, it was just the way things panned out. "Mark told me on the day before the first game of the season he was going to put me on the bench as I hadn't really had time to gel with the team. "Then Brighton kept a clean sheet in that match and the next one too and it meant I didn't get a look in."

Wolves World confirmed 5th September that Matt has had a cruciate ligament operation on his left knee and is now recovering prior to starting rehab next week. He will be out for 6-7 months. Murray rocked by more injury woe Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray is facing an estimated six months on the sidelines after doctors diagnosed a cruciate knee ligament tear. The 26-year-old picked up the injury during a training session and an exploratory operation has now confirmed the severity of the problem. Murray had suffered a similar injury to the same, left knee while on loan at Kingstonian seven years ago and now he has been scheduled for reconstructive surgery which is expected to be performed before the end of the month. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said: "It is a blow to us and a major disappointment for Matt. "He had a great season last year and was really looking forward to the new one. "Fortunately, we have an excellent young goalkeeper in Wayne Hennessey who can step into the team and do well for us." Hennessey, 20, had deputised for Murray during last season's Championship play-off semi-final defeats to West Brom after Molineux's first-choice goalkeeper suffered a fractured shoulder. But it was while on a three-month loan that Hennessey helped Stockport to a Football League-record nine consecutive clean-sheet wins earlier in 2006-07. With third choice Carl Ikeme currently recovering from a knee operation of his own, Hennessey counts as the only fit goalkeeper on Wanderers' books. Now McCarthy is expected to step up his search for a loan signing to provide cover for Hennessey in time for the Championship curtain-raiser against visiting Watford on Saturday. I never saw any of them play, but Billy Wright, Bill Slater, Bert Williams, Peter Broadbent etc. can only be described as gentlemen and fantastic ambassadors for Wolves. From conversations with supporters, they have a high regard for Peter Broadbent as a quality player; from my experience he was equally as impressive as a person. |

But he will always be remembered at Molineux for scoring the winner against the Baggies
