WOLVES, The Glory Years a new book by Dave Instone.
Wolves The Glory Years £16.99 + pp - or pick it up from the shop. (see website for order information)
Three League Championships, two FA Cups, FA Youth Cup heroics, several other near misses and a record to be proud of in ground-breaking floodlit matches against Europe’s finest... Wolverhampton Wanderers were truly a class act half a century ago.
They were right up there alongside Manchester United and, for several memorable years, eclipsed them as they thrilled audiences at home and abroad with their zest for goals from fast, direct attacking.
Wolves: The Glory Years, a £16.99 hardback by David Instone, is a season- by- season account of the club’s rise to greatness, enriched by a host of interviews with the stars of the day, such as Bert Williams, Malcolm Finlayson, Eddie Stuart, Bill Shorthouse, Bill Slater, Ron Flowers, Norman Deeley, Roy Swinbourne, Dennis Wilshaw, Jimmy Dunn and Ted Farmer. The colour photo here shows some of those players -Bill Shorthouse, Bert Williams,Peter Broadbent, Eddie Stuart, and Ron Flowers at half time in the Millwall match celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Honved match (see match)
This is the story, backed by dozens of superb, little-seen photographs, of how they and many others made Wolves the team to fear under Stan Cullis in the 1950s. The excellent front cover, pictured here shows skipper Billy Wright with manager Stan Cullis leading the Wolves out for the 49 Cup Final with Leicester’s Norman Plummer, and Bill Slater, Footballer of the Year, holds the FA Cup high after beating Blackburn in 1960. (You can see videos of these two games if you are a member of London Wolves on the Cups + page.)
Once again, the publishers are giving supporters the chance, for no extra cost, to have their name or that of a friend or family member included in the scroll of honour at the back. To take advantage of this popular facility, customers must purchase in advance and the deadline for this facility will be no later than mid-July..
Also, supporters will, as in the past, be able to pick up pre-purchased copies from the club shop at Molineux if they choose not to pay postage and packing. The books will be available at the shop from Friday, August 5.
The publishers have also accessed around 180 rarely seen Wolves photographs and memorabilia items for use in the book, which is a £16.99 hard-back in the size of the Steve Bull, My Memories of Wolves publication – and with nearly 150 pages.
