2009 DETAILS - LONDON FLORA MARATHON

message from Phil:

Got in on ballot, training has been woeful, so I just hope to complete in 1 piece. Raising money for www.wellchild.org.uk I possibly might stop half way round for a pint of Guinness (I’m serious!)

I’m doing it as spiderman this year. www.justgiving.co.uk/spidermanmarathon email if you;d like to send a donation direct to Phil webmaster@londonwolves.com

Only just created just giving site. My fundraising is very low key this year as I have no minimum target to reach and after the frantic efforts of previous years. I raised over £12,000 with the 5 full marathons to date.

and an Interview with Phil in his company’s magazine...

Keep on Runnin’…

We recently caught up with (or is that kept up with?) Phil Bant from the ATSE Supply Support Team, to talk about one of his activities outside of work – running.

How did you first get into running?

I absolutely hated exercise at school; I would sometimes deliberately forget my PE kit and was often picked last for teams. Then I saw the London Marathon on the TV and knew that one day I’d love to take part.

So what got you started?

I joined ATSE in 2002 and was suddenly surrounded by cakes and biscuits. I quickly gained about two stone in weight, so when a gym opened next door, I joined and started swimming every morning before work.

Did you notice a difference?

The two mile jog that used to kill me was suddenly less of a challenge, so I kept going until one day, without even realising it, was running around six miles.

So what was your first Marathon?

The first half Marathon I completed was in Bath in March 2004, which took me one hour 45 minutes. I then took part in the Flora London Marathon in April 2005, dressed as Superman, finishing in four hours and 15 minutes.

How many Marathons have you run to date?

London 2009 will be my sixth full Marathon, having completed three in London, one in New York and one in Dublin. I’ve also run 15 half Marathons, including the Great North Run. In total I’ll have covered some 354 race miles.

Is running an expensive hobby?

All my expenses, travel, hotels, running shoes, etc are paid for out of my own pocket, which means that every penny I raise in sponsorship goes directly to the charities I support. But it still works out a lot cheaper than a £40 a month gym membership!

Do family and friends travel too to support you?

I’ve made a number of friends in the running community, and this year my girlfriend Jayne will be travelling down to London to support me.

How much have you raised so far?

I’ve raised about £12,000 for various charities including the National Autistic Society and Dreams Come True.

Which charity are you supporting this year?

This year I am supporting Wellchild. Anything anyone can do to help families with the heartache of having a poorly child is worthwhile.

What’s next after London?

In the next few years I’d love to have a crack at the Paris and Rome Marathons and maybe even compete in a Triathlon too! Harry, my 7 year old son, has said that when he’s 18 he wants to run a Marathon with me, so I may just have to come out of retirement when I’m 50 to do just one last one!

Phil is running the Flora London Marathon on 26 April 2009 dressed as Spiderman  To sponsor him please visit:  www.justgiving.co.uk/spidermanmarathon.

2006 London as Batman with Robin & Batgirl

6th May - Phil reports he’s well on the way to raising another £3,000 for his two autism charities.

Phil Mark and Glyn completed the London Marathon course in 2 minutes under 4 hours, crossing the line together just over a minute ahead of Adrian Chiles, Baggies fan and MOTD2 presenter.pic BBC London

Holy Kryptonite! Superman’s been exposed to his worst nightmare and the green stuff has stopped him from competing in this year’s marathon. Fortunately, though, it’s morphed him into another superhero. Yes, Phil will be running with Mark Knight as Batman and Robin.  London Wolves are pleased that member Phil has asked to represent the club and his cape will carry the Howling Wolf. While Batman and Robin are in training though, we urge you to support Phil’s charities - his excellent achievements last year are shown in the articles below. The London Flora 2006 Marathon is on St George’s Day, 23 April, the day afte the home match against Brighton so you get down there and support them. (nb The Batman picture is not Phil or Mark!). Batman is seen on the left with Glenn at the London Wolves meet the players on 17th March. For more pictures of him with the players click here

Phli with Glyn Marston as Batgirl - scary!Their donation website is at http://www.justgiving.com/pjb or http://www.justgiving.co.uk/pjb Phil and Mark are collecting again for the National Autistic Society. Please donate generously. STOP PRESS: 10April - Batman and Robin will be escorting Batgirl around London. The delicious Batgirl is in fact Ultra runner and famous fundraiser for Autism - Glyn Marston whose son Liam suffers from Autism.  Glyn’s own website shows many of his fundraising activities including 12 previous London Flora Marathons. You can see more about Glyn on http://www.glynmarstonultradistancerunner.com/

At half time during the Coventry 2-2 draw, Phil presented cheques to Autism West Midlands represented by Paul Tromans and the National Autistic Society represented byKate Bains. Phil also shows his cape with London Wolves on the pitch and with Wolves Vice President Rachael Heyhoe Flint. Phil’s picture was also on the main screen. Phil’s cape was printed by Oceanshade.com

Here are Phil and Mark - ready to run

2005 raising £6000 for Autism charities

PHIL’S finishing time was 4hours 15 minutes in the London Marathon. And he’s now raised £6,000 for Autism thanks to donations still coming in from Wolves sponsors Phil met another Wolves runner en route so had someone to chat to. He also beat BBC presenter Adrian Chiles dressed as Baggie Bird, but welcomed the medicinal Guinness after the race. Phil came in 13,303rd out of nearly 36,000 runners. Phil described the crowd support as brilliant with people calling out his name or Superman (emblazoned on his outfit by the Wolves shop). Here’s Phil with Bully and Paul Walker plus Pete Darricott and John Watts of Telford Wolves and Dave and Peter from WWLSC. Phil thanks all his sponsors including London Wolves and Telford Wolves.

You can still donate - contact Phil at phil@philbant.com or on-line at http://www.justgiving.co.uk/pjb

or write to him at 139 The Briars Leighswood Road Aldridge Walsall West Midlands WS9 8AQ

So, what did he get up to on the day. Clearly using his superpowers he found that the runners were leaving him behind so he had to concentrate on the race. But once he’d finsihed he waited for Baggie Bird (Adrian Chiles) to finish at the Horsgeuards and was spoling for a fight.  And it’s thirsty work, this marathon running, so a good dose of Irish kryptonite soon had him bending lampposts again as he tried to wreck the joint. The other problem is that all there’s nowhere for a superhero to change so he had to continue on the cryptonite still in his superman gear, and couldn’t return to being Phil “Clark Kent” Bant.

Phil wanted to thank all those who have supported him and donated or bought raffle tickets, including signed Wolves Shirt winner Paul Walker, and Telford Wolves and London Wolves and especially Rachel Heyhoe-Flint at the Wolves for all her help including asking Bully to present the shirt.

UPDATE 11th April. Phil announced to the Moli faithful that he’s raised over £4,000 so far. Before the great 2-0 win over promotion candidates Ipswich Wolves legend Steve Bull presented the shirt to Paul Walker of Telford Wolves. Pete Darricott of Telford who sold the ticket and Dave Slape from London Wolves took part in the presentation organised by ever-efficient Rachel Heyhoe-Flint while manager Glenn Hoddle looked on. Phil’s run is next Sunday - so watch out for his red cape among the 37,000!

Talking of looking out for people, in the third picture you can see Dave Slape with Glenn Hoddle just behind him in the tunnel watching the Tractor Boys warm up.

Update 5th April - Phil sold some £700 worth of tickets for the shirt and hopes to present it to the winner Paul Walker during the live on Sky match against Ipswich on Monday 11th April. The winning ticket number 000251 was sold by Pete Darricott of Telford Wolves (see our links page)

Original story: Wolves have officially nominated Phil Bant as their runner in the London Marathon on April 17th.  The picture at Moli shows Phil in his Superman gear (in which he’s going to run the marathon) with Glenn and wife Sarah and three year old son Harry, who suffers from a mild form of Autism. Phil asked Stu to mention his run on our site and to give you links to his sponsorship site. He is running for the National Autistic Society and Autism-West Midlands. Phil says:

I've never done this kind of fundraising before (nor run a marathon) and obviously want to raise as much sponsorship for the 2 charities I'm supporting as possible, especially as a lot of the money will be earmarked specifically for Wolverhampton. Can you help by mentioning it on your website and perhaps putting a link to my charity page? see link above. Link?

“Wolves have donated a signed shirt with Glenn Hoddle's, Rick Hayward's and 20 of the 1st team squad signatures for my raffle and also given me free hire of the Terrace Bar for a charity disco. (Watch this space the date for the disco. Phil is hoping to be supported at this by ex-Wolves stars)” Phil now has raffle tickets available to win the signed Wolves shirt. Contact him directly or ask Dave Slape on the train for one. Each ticket is £1, and they are available in books of five.

in the Express & Star Phil also said

"I'm not going to wear a watch on the day, I'm doing it for my son and to get round, but everyone is supporting me, Wolves have been fantastic, and the sentiments of the fans will be with me on the day"

February 6th, as a warm-up Phil completed 19 miles for the first time.  We’ll try to keep you up-to-date with his progress and the status of the fundraising here.....

You can also email Phil at wolves@philsmarathon.com Contact him directly for raffle tickets or ask Dave Slape who will have some available on the train hopefully for Crewe, but certainly by Burnley home match.

Phil did a lap of honour at half time at the Watford home match in his Superman outfit - Here he is setting off on his lap of honour. “To eternity and beyond” - sorry wrong superhero
