2009 DETAILS - LONDON FLORA MARATHON message from Phil: Got in on ballot, training has been woeful, so I just hope to complete in 1 piece. Raising money for www.wellchild.org.uk I possibly might stop half way round for a pint of Guinness (I’m serious!) I’m doing it as spiderman this year. www.justgiving.co.uk/spidermanmarathon email if you;d like to send a donation direct to Phil webmaster@londonwolves.com
Only just created just giving site. My fundraising is very low key this year as I have no minimum target to reach and after the frantic efforts of previous years. I raised over £12,000 with the 5 full marathons to date. and an Interview with Phil in his company’s magazine... Keep on Runnin’… We recently caught up with (or is that kept up with?) Phil Bant from the ATSE Supply Support Team, to talk about one of his activities outside of work – running. How did you first get into running? I absolutely hated exercise at school; I would sometimes deliberately forget my PE kit and was often picked last for teams. Then I saw the London Marathon on the TV and knew that one day I’d love to take part.
So what got you started? I joined ATSE in 2002 and was suddenly surrounded by cakes and biscuits. I quickly gained about two stone in weight, so when a gym opened next door, I joined and started swimming every morning before work.
Did you notice a difference? The two mile jog that used to kill me was suddenly less of a challenge, so I kept going until one day, without even realising it, was running around six miles. So what was your first Marathon? The first half Marathon I completed was in Bath in March 2004, which took me one hour 45 minutes. I then took part in the Flora London Marathon in April 2005, dressed as Superman, finishing in four hours and 15 minutes. How many Marathons have you run to date? London 2009 will be my sixth full Marathon, having completed three in London, one in New York and one in Dublin. I’ve also run 15 half Marathons, including the Great North Run. In total I’ll have covered some 354 race miles. Is running an expensive hobby? All my expenses, travel, hotels, running shoes, etc are paid for out of my own pocket, which means that every penny I raise in sponsorship goes directly to the charities I support. But it still works out a lot cheaper than a £40 a month gym membership! Do family and friends travel too to support you? I’ve made a number of friends in the running community, and this year my girlfriend Jayne will be travelling down to London to support me. How much have you raised so far? I’ve raised about £12,000 for various charities including the National Autistic Society and Dreams Come True. Which charity are you supporting this year? This year I am supporting Wellchild. Anything anyone can do to help families with the heartache of having a poorly child is worthwhile. What’s next after London? In the next few years I’d love to have a crack at the Paris and Rome Marathons and maybe even compete in a Triathlon too! Harry, my 7 year old son, has said that when he’s 18 he wants to run a Marathon with me, so I may just have to come out of retirement when I’m 50 to do just one last one! Phil is running the Flora London Marathon on 26 April 2009 dressed as Spiderman To sponsor him please visit: www.justgiving.co.uk/spidermanmarathon.
2006 London as Batman with Robin & Batgirl
6th May - Phil reports he’s well on the way to raising another £3,000 for his two autism charities. Phil Mark and Glyn completed the London Marathon course in 2 minutes under 4 hours, crossing the line together just over a minute ahead of Adrian Chiles, Baggies fan and MOTD2 presenter.pic BBC London
At half time during the Coventry 2-2 draw, Phil presented cheques to Autism West Midlands represented by Paul Tromans and the National Autistic Society represented byKate Bains. Phil also shows his cape with London Wolves on the pitch and with Wolves Vice President Rachael Heyhoe Flint. Phil’s picture was also on the main screen. Phil’s cape was printed by Oceanshade.com Here are Phil and Mark - ready to run
2005 raising £6000 for Autism charities
You can still donate - contact Phil at phil@philbant.com or on-line at http://www.justgiving.co.uk/pjb or write to him at 139 The Briars Leighswood Road Aldridge Walsall West Midlands WS9 8AQ So, what did he get up to on the day. Clearly using his superpowers he found that the runners were leaving him behind so he had to concentrate on the race. But once he’d finsihed he waited for Baggie Bird (Adrian Chiles) to finish at the Horsgeuards and was spoling for a fight. And it’s thirsty work, this marathon running, so a good dose of Irish kryptonite soon had him bending lampposts again as he tried to wreck the joint. The other problem is that all there’s nowhere for a superhero to change so he had to continue on the cryptonite still in his superman gear, and couldn’t return to being Phil “Clark Kent” Bant.
Phil wanted to thank all those who have supported him and donated or bought raffle tickets, including signed Wolves Shirt winner Paul Walker, and Telford Wolves and London Wolves and especially Rachel Heyhoe-Flint at the Wolves for all her help including asking Bully to present the shirt. U Talking of looking out for people, in the third picture you can see Dave Slape with Glenn Hoddle just behind him in the tunnel watching the Tractor Boys warm up.

“I've never done this kind of fundraising before (nor run a marathon) and obviously want to raise as much sponsorship for the 2 charities I'm supporting as possible, especially as a
in the Express & Star Phil also said "I'm not going to wear a watch on the day, I'm doing it for my son and to get round, but everyone is supporting me, Wolves have been fantastic, and the sentiments of the fans will be with me on the day" February 6th, as a warm-up Phil completed 19 miles for the first time. We’ll try to keep you up-to-date with his progress and the status of the fundraising here..... You can also email Phil at wolves@philsmarathon.com Contact him directly for raffle tickets or ask Dave Slape who will have some available on the train hopefully for Crewe, but certainly by Burnley home match. Phil did a lap of honour at half time at the Watford home match in his Superman outfit - Here he is setting off on his lap of honour. “To eternity and beyond” - sorry wrong superhero
