Incredibly it was Jody Craddock who again gave the ball away to a top club - enabling Paul Scholes to score his 100th Premiership goal - and ManU to nick all the points. While Sam Vokes was given one + three minutes to turn the match around and had two attempts, on of which was a bad miss - but how can you expect someone who's not playing to come on cold and do that (unless the name's Kevin Phillips?). Yet another ref who favours players in red, but nothing like as bad as two awful linesmen. Apart from this defensive disaster Wolves had contained ManU well playing for a 0-0 but Edwin van der Sar wasn't at all disurbed.

Wolves 0 Manchester United 1 (Scholes 72)

It was a case of the same old story at Molineux as Wolves slipped to an undeserved and narrow defeat against a Manchester United side that moved back to the top of the table courtesy of a 72nd minute goal from Paul Scholes. In stoppage time substitute Sam Vokes missed a great chance of giving Wolves a share of the spoils which was the very least Mick McCarthy's battling players deserved.

Wolves, who were again unchanged, kicked-off attacking the South Bank end against the reigning Premier League Champions. Wanderers were a yard away from opening their account in the sixth minute thanks to the persistence of Kevin Doyle who went on a run from halfway and appeared to be tripped as he passed wide to Matt Jarvis. But the striker regained his feet and was in position to take a return pass and hit a shot that ran out past the far post. Two minutes later Antonio Valencia took a pass on the United right and cut in before unleashing a shot that curled wide although Marcus Hahnemann looked to have the ball covered. On the quarter-hour mark one time Molineux loanee Darron Gibson stabbed the ball wide after Dimitar Berbatov had helped on Nani's free-kick. The first corner of the half went Wolves' way but after Jarvis's kick was headed out, Karl Henry's shot was blocked. Nani was lucky to escape a booking when he caught Ronald Zubar in the face with a high challenge, before Hahnemann took a bouncing effort from Gibson who had connected with Berbatov's cross. Gibson wasn't far off with a shot on the turn from the edge of the box, and Hahnemann saved easily from Michael Carrick whose low shot lacked power. The deadlock was almost broken in the 32nd minute after Doyle fed Jarvis on the left. The winger pulled the ball back into the path of Dave Jones but as he shot at goal Carrick got in a challenge that took the sting out of the effort allowing Edwin Van Der Sar to save. Four minutes later there was great chance for Stephen Ward but his header from Jarvis's centre flew straight to Van Der Sar.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 United 0

Gary Neville was an interval replacement for Wes Brown for the visitors who started the new half strongly. Ward slipped over allowing Valencia to run into the box from the right. He pulled the ball back to Berbatov whose on target shot was blocked by Christophe Berra who threw himself in the way of the ball. Berbatov looked offside as he ran onto Carrick's over the top ball. But the flag stayed down and, fortunately for Wolves, the Bulgarian failed to control the ball from inside the six-yard box. Henry was wide from 20-yards and then United went close again after Gibson found Patrice Evra whose shot took a deflection off Jody Craddock forcing Hahnemann to save at Berbatov's feet On 57 minutes Jarvis laid the ball into the path of Kevin Foley but Scholes got across quickly to block. Nemanja Vidic was yellow carded after crudely halting Adlene Guedioura's run 25-yards out from Van Der Sar's goal. Jones's free-kick bounced to safety off the defensive wall. Craddock, for a foul on Nani, and Jones, for a late challenge on Carrick, were booked and then United sent Mame Diouf on in place of Gibson. Foley skied an effort when he took a swing at another cross from Jarvis. Doyle controlled the ball when it dropped but his shot took a deflection and then was cleared. United took the lead in the 72nd minute after Craddock deflected away a low cross from Nani. The ball went straight to Scholes who sidestepped a challenge from Craddock, who slipped, and fired inside the far post. Almost immediately, Nani was replaced by Ji-Sung Park. Van Der Sar then looked to have misjudged a curling effort from Jarvis - the Belgium keeper scrambling across his goal at the last minute as the ball went narrowly wide of the post.Diouf headed a Neville cross over the bar from a good position before Wolves made a double switch sending on Andy Keogh and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for Ward and Guedioura respectively. Then, with a minute of normal time remaining, Vokes took the place of Jarvis. And in the four minute of stoppage time the young Welsh striker lifted the ball over the bar from eight-yards out after Zubar had prodded a Keogh pass into his path.

As it happened (on Wolves live action page)

Teams out and ready to go. Don Goodman has done a great job as pitchside host getting the crowd going. Game on!

Off and running. Both teams wearing black armbands in memory of Keith Alexander, who passed away earlier this week.

Quiet start and then the first opening falls to Wolves. Doyle breaks through midfield and finds Jarvis. The winger knocks it back into Doyle who doesn't catch the shot right which flies across goal.

And now United's first sighter. Former Wolves loanee Gibson finds Valencia on the right and he decides to go for goal, a fierce drive wide of the post which Hahnemann watches go wide.

Assistant referee dow by the South Bank already getting some stick after two early pro-United decisions.

United on the attack and Nani finds a bit of room but his long range drive is wide.

Guedioura does well to dispossess Berbatov and propel forward but Scholes gets back to cover and knocks the ball off the Wolves man for a goal kick.

Oh dear. Another 50-50 with Henry and Carrick pulling each other's shirts and the free kick goes to Manchester United. 35 yards out. ~Mick McCarthy in mock hysterics at the decision.

Nani's low free kick driven into the area, flicked on by Berbatov and Gibson slides in to put his effort wide.

And now widespread applause as Wolves are awarded a free kick!

Jones sends in a great delivery which flicks off a United head and out for a corner.

Corner headed out and Guedioura gets a good contact on his shot which is blocked by Berbatov.

Unbelievable decision from referee Walton. Referee Nani flies in face high with his foot to flatten Zubar. Free kick but no card. McCarthy and Connor enraged on the touchline.

United break and Gibson is found by Berbatov on the left and hits a shot into the ground which still forces Hahnemann into a save.

Great challenge from Guedioura sets Doyle away but the striker just runs it too far and is tackled.

Now United break and it's Gibson heavily involved, his cross-shot finishing up well wide.

Reasonable chance for United as the ball is worked to Carrick on the edge of the area. But the midfielder is at full stretch and can only direct the ball towards Hahnemann.

Great move from Wolves sparked by the irrepresible Doyle. Striker turns away from a challenge and then runs at the heart of the defence before feeding Jarvis. Jarvis plays it back in to Jones whose first time shot takes a deflection off Caddick and goes through to Van Der Sar.

At the other end Valencia breaks and fires in a low cross. Nani misses it at the near post and the angle is too acute for Gibson at the far who can only direct the ball across goal for Hahnemann to collect.

Another great Wolves move. Jarvis sends in a pinpoint cross and Ward, a boyhood Manchester United fan, has time to head towards goal but it's too close to Van Der Sar who gathers comfortably.

United have certainly started to shade the possession but without creating anything concrete as yet. One minute added time to follow.

HALF TIME: WOLVES 0-0 UNITED

Change for United with Neville on for Brown. Off and running again.

Wolves think they've got an early corner as Zubar knocks the ball off a United defender but the ball was already out. Goal kick.

First real chance falls to United. Valencia turns inside Ward and finds Berbatov whose shot is blocked well by Berra.

United have come out of the traps strongly and Berbatov is through after producing an expert piece of control from Carrick's pass. But the need to control a half ball gives Craddock time to come back and make a crucial challenge.

Henry running across the area and sends in a shot but it's well wide.

United so close. Evra runs into the area from Gibson pass and his effort is blocked by Craddock forcing Hahnemann into a save. Ball bounces back to Evra and it needs a challenge from a couple of Wolves defender to force it out for a corner. Corner is cleared out to Caddick who slices a difficult chance wide.

United doing a lot of the pressing now. Valencia sends in a cross from the right which is met with a flicked header from Nani which drifts narrowly wide.

But Wolves still showing what they can do on the attack as well. Jarvis finds Foley with a clever pass but his shot is blocked by Scholes.

Guedioura now running at the United defence before being hacked down by Vidic. Predictable yellow card following the rash challenge.

Every United player back for the free kick just outside the area but Jones's effort is blocked by the wall.

United win a corner but Craddock is booked. Seemingly for a late challenge on Nani earlier in the move but the replay shows he barely touched him. Sir Alex Ferguson out of the technical area to have a few words with the fourth official.

You wait 58 minutes for a card and then three come along in three. Jones the latest for a late challenge on Carrick.

Second change for United, Diouf on for Gibson.

Jarvis gets to the byline and crosses but Foley misses his kick at the back post. Wolves keep up the momentum and Doyle's effort is deflected.

Guedioura now down for treatment after challenge from Evra.

Another probing run from Jarvis down the left and his cross is blocked for a corner. It's easily cleared by Diouf however. Ferguson now on the edge of his technical area having a few words with referee Walton.

Jarvis scuttles across the edge of the area but is off balance as he shoots and it's sliced high and wide.

GOAL: SCHOLES 0-1. United break the deadlock. Nani's cross is cleared and Scholes is coolness personified as he sidesteps a couple of challenges to create the space to fire low past Hahnemann.

Substitution immediately afterwards as Park comes on for Nani.

Jarvis steps inside and tries to dink in a cross. Doesn't catch it how he'd like but the curl brings the ball back in towards goal and has Van Der Sar scampering across to make sure it goes wide.

United close to an immediate second. Park plays a neat one-two with Berbatov which leaves him through but on the right hand side of goal and his attempted pullback is blocked by Berra.

Another glorious United chance. Neville swings in a cross to the back post where Diouf is unmarked but he gets his header all wrong and it's over.

 Crowd today is 28, 883.

Wolves fail to make the most of a bit of possession and United break leaving Henry as the last man back. Diouf stretches his legs but the skipper is across with a decent challenge which helps put pressure on and the shot is across goal and wide.

Valencia driving down the right again and his low cross almost falls to Diouf but there's a Wolves touch in there and it goes back to Hahnemann.

Park now breaks on the other flank and tries an audacious half volley which isn't too far away.

Double change for Wolves. Keogh and Ebanks-Blake for Ward and Guedioura. Foley back to left back in a 4-4-2 with Jarvis and Keogh either side of Doyle and Ebanks-Blake.

Wolves trying in vain for an equaliser with Doyle shooting from outside of the box but he doesn't get the right connection on it and it's wide.

Final change for Wolves, Vokes on for a tired-looking Jarvis. Doyle to wide right, Vokes up top with Ebanks-Blake.

Four minites added time to follow.

+1: Agony for Wolves. Zubar battles away inside the area and the ball breaks to Vokes but bounces up at just the wrong time and he hammers it over the bar. There wasn't a flag and replay shows a United defender was playing Vokes onside.

+2: Vokes now on the end of a Keogh cross which hangs in the air. Needs to get all the power on the header and does so but it's wide.

FULL TIME: WOLVES 0-1 UNITED
